Commanders named surprise suitor for disgruntled (but dynamic) offensive weapon

This would be surprising.

Adam Peters hasn't been shy in acquiring players via trade over recent months. The Washington Commanders are ahead of schedule, and the general manager responded accordingly, shelling out draft capital for veteran performers with Pro Bowl or better production.

And he might not be done just yet.

The Commanders only have five picks during the 2025 NFL Draft as things stand. They're in a decent financial position moving forward, but the need to maximize quarterback Jayden Daniels' rookie contract cannot be overstated. Urgency is high and expectations have risen. Peters adjusted his plan slightly while also maintaining flexibility in the coming years as part of his long-term project.

Acquiring cornerback Marshon Lattimore, wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr., and left tackle Laremy Tunsil were major statements of intent from Peters. A respected NFL analyst believes Washington has enough left in the chamber for one more big swing.

The prize? Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

Commanders linked with surprising Tyreek Hill trade, but it seems highly unlikely

While it seems the Dolphins and Hill patched up their differences, his recent social media activity reignited rumors linking the All-Pro with a move this offseason. That would likely come before or during the draft, with Maurice Moton from The Bleacher Report putting together a potential package that could be enough to get the dynamic wideout onto Washington's squad in 2025.

"They acquired wideout Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers, and they have enough cap space ($26.3 million) to make another move at the position. Remember that Samuel saw a significant drop-off in his receiving numbers after his 2021 Pro Bowl campaign. Though he offers versatility out of the backfield, he's been a No. 2 or 3 option in the 49ers' passing offense. Terry McLaurin and Hill can be a nightmare tandem for opposing defenders. Both can attack all three levels of the field, though the latter provides unmatched speed on the perimeter. With [Tyreek] Hill in the fold, Daniels could let it rip a lot more downfield for back-breaking plays that put opponents away in close matchups."

Hill is an exceptional player and remains one of the league's best when firing on all cylinders. At the same time, this doesn't seem like a move the Commanders should make right now.

They made a strong commitment to Samuel this offseason. The Commanders brought back Noah Brown. Terry McLaurin is the alpha who could get another lucrative extension from the organization before competitive action commences once again. Hopes remain high that Luke McCaffrey can emerge as a decent contributor.

It's hard to envision where Hill would fit. He's also on big money, so it doesn't make much business sense either, considering the money tied up with McLaurin and Samuel next season.

Perhaps Hill was just blowing off some steam by taking the bait with fans regarding his future. The Dolphins haven't shown any willingness to trade the player. That might change with a bombshell offer, but all signs point to the wideout being part of their plans.

After that, things are far less certain. Hill counts a whopping $51.89 million against Miami's salary cap in the final year of his deal in 2026. There's no chance he'll be on the books at that number, which brings an extension or perhaps even an early release into the equation.

As for the Commanders? They are comfortable with what they have right now. If Peters wanted to add another wide receiver, it would come through the draft.
