Commanders are (mercifully) all but eliminated from contention to land star WR

There won't be any tears shed about this one...

It's no secret that the Washington Commanders need wide receiver help this offseason. They must acquire better complimentary pieces to place around second-team All-Pro Terry McLaurin. Adam Peters will turn over every stone to ensure he completes this objective in the coming months.

Speculation is running rampant regarding who could potentially come into the fold. The Commanders are a hotbed destination once again. They have sufficient salary-cap space and seven draft picks to make the moves needed. Nothing should be completely dismissed given Peters' aggressive roster-building strategy.

One contentious link centered on soon-to-be-released wide receiver Davante Adams. The All-Pro's future with the New York Jets is murkier than ever after the franchise informed quarterback Aaron Rodgers he won't be part of their plans under new head coach Aaron Glenn. The two are closely linked, and trading the wideout seems unlikely considering teams know he'll be released with $29.88 million in savings attached.

The Commanders were touted as a potential landing spot for Adams if he became available. That irked some fans considering how derogatory the former second-round pick's been about the organization previously. But an insider report seems to put Washington all but out of the running even if Peters showed interest.

Commanders won't be among Davante Adams' preferred destinations (and that's fine)

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN revealed that Adams wants to join a West Coast team when his eventual fate with the Jets is sealed. He hails from the region and with one or two more years of solid production left, playing closer to home is something he reportedly prefers.

"The Jets must address the future of receiver Davante Adams, whose $38.3 million cap hit is untenable. A source told me Adams is intrigued by a return to the West Coast and would be open to potentially joining teams such as the Rams or Chargers -- if he gets released. I would put the 49ers in the conversation, too. Adams grew up in Northern California."

Washington is pretty far away from the West Coast. That takes them out of the equation, which isn't a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination.

Adams remains one of the league's best route technicians. He's lost some explosiveness, but the Fresno State product knows how to get open. This also seems like a win-now move that would intrigue the Commanders with the need to maximize Jayden Daniels' rookie contract.

Not many fans will be crying about Adams declaring his intentions that don't include Washington. Peters might not have inquired in any case, but there are several other intriguing options in free agency or the draft that can fill the void.

There is a lot of baggage around Adams these days. The wideout forced his way out of the Green Bay Packers and Las Vegas Raiders. Reports of friction between the veteran and Jets receiver Garrett Wilson didn't take too long to arrive. The talent might be worth the risk for someone, but finding strong characters that fit into Washington's culture shift is just as important for Peters.

This potential move was nothing more than speculation around the media. Adams' desire to make his triumphant return to the California sunshine means Peters will look elsewhere.

That's not a bad thing. Far from it, actually.
