Could a reunion be something to consider?

The Washington Commanders' offensive line will look a lot different next season. Adam Peters revamped the unit through the draft and trade market. It'll also be without the presence of stud right guard Sam Cosmi initially.

Cosmi suffered a torn ACL in the NFC divisional round against the Detroit Lions. He's expected to miss most if not all of the 2025 campaign, sparking an analyst to tout an emotional reunion with someone who earned All-Pro honors in Washington.

Commanders linked to emotional reunion with Brandon Scherff

Sterling Xie from Pro Football Network thought Brandon Scherff would be the perfect stop-gap until Cosmi is ready to return. This would leave second-year pro Brandon Coleman to fight it out with Nick Allegretti for the starting left guard spot after the Commanders spent the No. 29 overall selection on Josh Conerly Jr.

"[Brandon] Scherff was a five-time Pro Bowler in seven seasons as Washington’s right guard. With the position’s status up in the air following Sam Cosmi’s torn ACL in the Divisional Round, it’s possible Scherff could return to his original team for a second stint. Signing Scherff wouldn’t necessarily squeeze out [Brandon] Coleman, who could compete with Nick Allegretti to start on the left side. It would raise the floor at right guard for the year if Cosmi isn’t able to return. Given how much Washington has already invested in improving Jayden Daniels’ supporting cast this offseason, it makes sense to ensure the offensive line isn’t shorthanded on the interior."

Scherff came to D.C. with a big reputation as the No. 5 pick. He more than met expectations, making the interior a force to be reckoned with during some dark days for the organization. Unfortunately, as was the case with most high-end performers under previous regimes, he left at the first opportunity.

A big-money move to the Jacksonville Jaguars followed. Scherff had some nice moments, but this was another toxic environment on a struggling franchise. The veteran wasn't brought back by the AFC South club in free agency and remains without a home. Much will depend on the money involved, but this wouldn't be a bad option if Peters believes more is needed on the protection.

Keeping star quarterback Jayden Daniels clean in the pocket is crucial. The Commanders might be happy with the options available, but Peters stops at nothing to raise competition and find upgrades. Scherff could also welcome the prospect of coming back to where it all started. And he'd be astonished by how unrecognizable the atmosphere is compared to the one he left behind.

Cosmi is one of the league's best right guards and will be missed greatly if an adequate replacement isn't found. Scherff's accomplished production last season — he didn't give up a sack in 2024 — makes him a worthy candidate if Peters isn't quite convinced in his current options.
