Commanders linked to controversial undrafted star nobody saw coming

This would be surprising, to say the least.

The Washington Commanders have done everything possible to surround star quarterback Jayden Daniels with the weapons needed to excel this offseason. One analyst believes Adam Peters should increase the options at his disposal with a shocking move for a controversial undrafted free agent remaining on the proverbial scrap heap.

Landon Belote from The Wrightway Sports Network believes the Commanders should take a swing at explosive wideout Isaiah Bond. Although the former Texas star is currently dealing with some serious off-the-field issues that completely decimated his draft stock, landing in this sort of environment is something the analyst thinks can get him back on the right track.

"If he can add more muscle to his frame as well as learn from a star receiver of Terry McLaurin’s caliber, then there is no telling just how vital of a long-term role he could play for Washington as they aspire to remain in championship contention for the foreseeable future. This would also allow [Isaiah] Bond to grow from a personal standpoint as an adult to avoid situations like the one he is currently involved in. This is what is commonly referred to as a low-risk, high-reward move that would bolster a receiver room that has attempted to add depth this offseason. Adding Bond would only add another potential contributor to the room."

It's a nice thought, but it is highly unlikely.

Commanders should want no part of Isaiah Bond right now

Bond was projected as a second-round pick by almost every draft aficionado during the assessment phase. His top-end speed, ability to gain yards after the catch, and versatility made him a coveted target within a receiver class not exactly brimming with talent.

Then, everything changed.

The wideout turned himself in over an outstanding warrant for an alleged sexual assault. He was released after posting a $25,000 bond and has since filed a federal lawsuit against his accuser, which alleges defamation and maintains his innocence.

What'll come from this is anyone's guess, but NFL teams aren't going to commit until the matter gets resolved. That's the bottom line.

The Commanders probably took Bond off their draft board immediately after this development became public knowledge. They have built a strong locker room with proven performers and an exceptional brotherhood. Peters is only interested in high-character guys with impeccable reputations on the field and away from the gridiron. That makes this a non-starter, in all honesty.

From a talent standpoint, Bond would help greatly. But there are simply too many unknowns and too much risk attached to picking him up right now.

That might change somewhere down the line. But don't bet on it.
