Adam Peters' defensive overhaul this offseason was both drastic and necessary. The Washington Commanders are far from the finished product on this side of the football, but there is more energy, explosiveness, and athleticism than at any stage during the 2025 campaign.

Even though there needs to be a strong focus on quarterback Jayden Daniels' supporting cast during the 2026 NFL Draft, the Commanders could also strengthen the defensive unit even more. Much will depend on how the board plays out at No. 7, but Peters has five other selections aside from that to capitalize on.

One position that could use another capable performer is the cornerback room. And there is a prospect going under the radar that the Commanders are keeping close tabs on.

Commanders would need a lot of luck to draft Texas corner Malik Muhammad

Texas standout Malik Muhammad revealed that the Commanders are among the teams that have shown an interest. He's a dynamic corner who emphatically answered any concerns about his athleticism at the NFL Scouting Combine. Unsurprisingly, this also came with renewed interest from several potential suitors around the league.

In addition to the Commanders, the defensive back also confirmed that the Las Vegas Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, and Pittsburgh Steelers have been keen to learn more. Muhammad is in high demand. Looking at his college tape, it's not hard to see why.

Muhammad is a fluid mover. His transitions are seamless, allowing him to break out of route stems with receivers and anticipate where the football is going effectively. He thrives in zone coverage, and he also plays with an edge against the run that is hard not to love.

Converting opportunities into turnovers is his next step. Muhammad makes a lot of plays, but the interceptions need to increase in the pros. His tackling technique also needs slight refinement, and becoming more disciplined in play-action could also help smooth his transition.

It'll be interesting to see where Muhammad gets drafted. Most experts have him touted as a second-round pick, so this is out of the question for Washington unless Peters can negotiate a trade-down from No. 7 overall. If the Commanders are hoping he somehow falls into the third round at No. 71, they might be out of luck.

Interest is too high in Muhammad for that. The testing matched the tape. All his perceived weaknesses are fixable. Putting him next to Trey Amos and Mike Sainristil gives the Commanders a potentially formidable trio with long-term upside attached.

The Commanders wanted to find out more. It remains to be seen whether it'll go any further, but fans don't have much longer to wait.
