One of the most interesting dynamics to watch where the Washington Commanders are concerned this offseason centers on their running back room. One team insider believes Brian Robinson Jr. is among those on the chopping block.

Robinson came into his third NFL season with lofty ambitions. The new regime liked his aggressive running and ability to gain yards in between the tackles. They signed veteran Austin Ekeler in free agency to provide relief in the passing game. Early signs indicated this was going to be a highly productive tandem.

Things started incredibly well for Robinson. He looked explosive and ran with purpose. He's never been the most dynamic backfield presence, but the former Alabama star is physical with a nose for the end zone.

Unfortunately for the Commanders, Robinson was unable to maintain his high standards throughout the campaign. The wear and tear of being a focal point began to take its toll. His influence waned considerably down the stretch and during the playoffs. While the offensive line regression played a part, it gave general manager Adam Peters plenty to ponder heading into the offseason.

Commanders insider believes Brian Robinson Jr.'s role could diminish in 2025

It would be surprising if Robinson wasn't around in the final year of his deal. However, JP Finlay from NBC Sports hinted that the 2021 third-round pick might not be the No. 1 option by the time organized team activities arrive.

"The run game fell apart late in the year. Jayden [Daniels] also emerged as a much better passer and runner. Yes, the run game got bogged down late. [Austin] Ekeler got hurt. Missed a lot of time. Then you started to get a bunch of injuries on the offensive line. I wouldn't dismiss any of that, right? I don't believe they'll go into next year with B-Rob [Brian Robinson Jr.] as their number one. It's easy to be dismissive of it, but I don't necessarily agree with that. He was really good for a period of time. He got some injuries. He was beat up. Ekeler and Robinson was a really dynamic duo, especially with Jayden's legs."

Washington shouldn't get complacent. They need to enhance the firepower around rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. If Peters decides that more is needed in the running back room, he shouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger.

This is an exceptionally deep draft class for running backs. Finding another option capable of making an immediate contribution will be considered. This also fits into Peters' strategy of building through the college ranks and supplementing any remaining needs in free agency.

Robinson should have a role to play. He's a power-back with proven production in the red zone and short-yardage situations. Altering his responsibilities slightly if an upgrade can be found is almost guaranteed. That might be disappointing for the player, but sentiment cannot enter the equation.

Peters will take everything into account before making his decision. Robinson (and others) will be nervously awaiting to see who comes in during what's going to be another eventful offseason of change. That should keep urgency high to put in the hard work needed away from the team.

That's all Robinson can do aside from performing to his early-season standards when called upon. Everything else is out of his hands.
