It's been smoke-and-mirrors season around the league before a fascinating NFL Draft. The Washington Commanders have seen several prospects hotly linked to their spot at No. 7 overall, but nobody has the first clue about what's going to happen before then.

Even so, one team insider doesn't think Peters is bluffing when it comes to his intended path.

During his pre-draft media availability, Peters didn't take anything off the table, especially with so much unpredictability expected at the top end. But standing pat and taking the best prospect available was his likeliest conclusion right now.

Commanders insider doesn't believe Adam Peters was bluffing with pre-draft statement

Some fans were skeptical. JP Finlay of NBC Sports didn't agree, taking Peters at his word. Whether this comes with an offensive weapon for quarterback Jayden Daniels or a defensive linchpin, there will be no hesitation from the general manager if he believes it can help take this organization forward.

"The Commanders have a ton of options at 7 but my thinking is GM Adam Peters is telling the truth that his squad is “more likely than not” going to select a player in the first round.

"That means help for this year, and help for Jayden could come in many different forms. A stud WR? Sure. Jeremiyah Love? Maybe, if he’s there. But even though a defensive player won’t catch a pass from Jayden, building up a terrible Commanders defense will help the entire team, and DQ & AP are certainly aware of that."

The Commanders will take things as they come. They have to, considering they don't have a second-round pick or a fourth-rounder to bargain with this year after trading for left tackle Laremy Tunsil. Getting some extra resources would be nice, but Peters also has no problem standing his ground and finding someone who could help immediately, either.

Peters will need contingencies; a lot of them. Being adaptable is critical. The Commanders must roll with the punches, trust their board, and make a strategic choice that finds the right balance between now and the future.

Nothing else will do.

Obviously, pressure is building after such a disappointing campaign. Peters put the Commanders in a more prosperous position with an aggressive free agency, but building through the draft remains a focal point. It's been a mixed bag from his first two classes so far, but all faith in the project has not been lost by any stretch of the imagination.

It won't be long before the rumors, hearsay, and speculation come to an end. And for Peters, he can finally get down to business.
