Commanders finally solve long-term WR puzzle in latest 2027 NFL mock draft

Washington adds a stud in Round 1 of this way-too-early exercise.

Terry McLaurin will be the centerpiece of the Washington Commanders' passing attack until further notice. And while the addition of weapon Stefon Diggs was timely and necessary, it should not stop Adam Peters from still relentlessly combing the market for long-term options at wide receiver.

Diggs is 32 years old, and while he still seems to have serious juice, he's on a one-year deal and won't play forever. Luke McCaffrey is a promising piece as well, and he could be in for an expanded role, but it's unlikely that he ever evolves into much more than a WR3 and a very good special teamer.

With the veteran market picked through at this point and the 2026 NFL Draft now months behind us, perhaps the Commanders' best chance of solving this long-term wide receiver puzzle is hiding in a generational 2027 college class. I know it's way early for mock drafts, but the future is still important.

And in ESPN's recent exercise, analyst Jordan Reid had Washington selecting Indiana wide receiver Charlie Becker in the first round, who would be a bona fide pass-catching solution for Jayden Daniels and David Blough's offense.

Assuming Diggs would be out of the building next spring, Becker would immediately step in and be the No. 2 option behind McLaurin. His numbers last season for the National Championship-winning Hoosiers won't jump off the page, but just about everything else will.

Becker caught 34 passes for 679 yards and four touchdowns in 2025, which is solid production, but nothing special. However, his 20.0 yards per reception led the Big Ten Conference, and Becker had a knack for coming through with big catches in clutch situations. He just has that "it" factor.

He is a true 'X' receiver with a big frame at 6-foot-4 and 207 pounds, but he isn't the fastest player in the world. And while that is still great in a vacuum, even better is that it perfectly complements a smaller, faster and more slender McLaurin.

The best aspect of Becker's game is his contested catch ability. He caught 13 of the 17 tight window throws or jump balls thrown his direction a season ago, which is a staggering number. And it should be kept in mind that he accomplished all of this in just 303 offensive snaps. Becker is crazy efficient.

Not to mention, he didn't have a single drop last year, he's physical at the top of the route and at the catch point, and he hung 126 yards on Ohio State during the Big Ten Championship. That sounds like a guy ready to take on a bigger role at Indiana with Elijah Sarratt and Omar Cooper Jr. now in the NFL.

Reid laid it out like this in his exercise, in which the Commanders took him No. 10 overall:

"The 6-foot-4, 207-pound Becker was the player I enjoyed studying the most this offseason. He exploded on the scene last November and was the X factor in Indiana's run to the national title, averaging 19.9 yards per reception (seventh in the FBS). Becker combines deep speed with elite ball tracking and excellent hand-eye coordination. His skill set would perfectly complement Jayden Daniels' deep-ball proficiency.

From a pure talent standpoint, Becker is one of the best in the class. But in terms of how he fits in with the Commanders offense, other pass-catchers and the quarterback's skill set, Becker would be a no-brainer near the top of next year's draft board.

In a way, Washington should be hoping that it is not in range to select a player of this caliber. But if Dan Quinn's team falls on hard times again in 2026, then Becker may just be the consolation prize that they need to boost their offense, solve their WR equation and get back on track.
