Commanders fans are sick as a painful departure explodes into playoff stardom

This looks like a massive mistake.

The Washington Commanders didn't come close to reaching the playoffs after a disastrous campaign. However, some former players and coaches are currently thriving in the unrivaled pressure of the knockout rounds.

One player, in particular, is making a significant difference. And it brought into question a decision made by general manager Adam Peters during his first offseason at the helm.

Peters did not think much of Ron Rivera's roster construction. This was especially evident with his draft picks. Most high-end selections were removed from the equation. Others taken further down the pecking order were also free to leave. Very few got a reprieve during the Commanders' roster revolution under their new front-office leader.

Kamren Curl's ascent to superstardom is making Commanders fans sick

That was the price for progress, and it worked right out of the gate. Things look much more uncertain now, but the choice not to offer safety Kamren Curl a new contract in 2024 is probably one that Peters would like to have back.

Curl emerged from a seventh-round pick into a highly capable starter. Peters didn't think his production warranted another financial commitment, and he signed for the Los Angeles Rams in free agency. He's taken his game to new heights with the NFC West club, and his sensational interception in overtime, which helped beat the Chicago Bears, played a leading role in Sean McVay's squad reaching the conference championship game.

Fans were critical of the decision to part ways with Curl at the time. The Commanders got outstanding production from Jeremy Chinn in the year after, but he wasn't kept around either. Peters and head coach Dan Quinn placed too much faith in 2023 second-round pick Quan Martin, and he failed to cope with the increased responsibilities on his shoulders.

Curl is thriving with the Rams. He's provided assurance on the back end of their defense. He remains a stout force against the run, and his improved position sense in coverage is much improved. The former Arkansas standout logged more reps than any safety around the NFL this season, and his 87 solo tackles ranked second league-wide.

How the Commanders could have used someone with this sort of accomplished consistency on their woeful defensive unit in 2025. There is nothing Peters can do about it now, but he better have a plan in place to improve the options across Washington's secondary to ensure the same complications don't arise again.

As for Curl? He's got the NFC Championship game in his sights. After that, he'll be on the lookout for a new deal, and the Rams would be wise to get an extension worked out quickly.
