The Washington Commanders are soaring under their exciting new regime. They went from a laughingstock to among the league's leading Super Bowl contenders in just one season. Considering this was just phase one of Adam Peters' long-term plan, it's only going to get better from here.
That's not the case with Washington's fiercest rival. A recent update regarding one of their most prolific players proves Jerry Jones has learned absolutely nothing from his roster mismanagement in recent years.
The Cowboys were way behind the Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles last season. Losing star quarterback Dak Prescott didn't help, but the team that always gets hyped up more than any other in the national media once again failed to meet lofty expectations.
Commanders fans know what an incompetent owner can do to an organization
Dallas promised to be selectively aggressive this offseason, whatever that means. Their signings haven't exactly struck fear into the Commanders or anyone else. There's also the dark cloud of Micah Parsons' lucrative contract extension hanging over the franchise that shows no signs of getting resolved just yet.
Parsons is waiting patiently while other pass-rushers around the league get paid handsomely. The Cowboys aren't in a hurry to get something worked out, even if this is only going to cost them more in the long run. That's exactly what happened with Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. A new report suggests Jones hasn't seen the error of his ways.
Jane Slater from the NFL Network clarified some rumors about Parsons' megabucks deal being finalized. The reporter did some digging and revealed that not only was the deal not close, but meaningful talks hadn't even started yet.
Just why the Cowboys are dithering once again is anyone's guess. Parsons is an elite player worthy of resetting the market. The former first-round pick is a perennial All-Pro and one of the few defensive players around the league who can take over any game. Dallas will get something worked out, but the price is only going up.
Maxx Crosby and Myles Garrett recently got extended. This won't have gone unnoticed by Parsons' representatives, who'll now start the bidding at north of $40 million per season and probably go up from there. Jones has once again backed himself into a corner when getting it done sooner would have saved him some cash.
Commanders fans can't help but laugh. This sort of negotiation buffonery is something they were ridiculed for constantly throughout Dan Snyder's reign of terror. Things look completely different now, with professionalism and purpose replacing incompetence and dysfunction.
The Cowboys are on the opposite side of the coin under the rule of one billionaire who always thinks he's the smartest guy in the room. Not even more than three decades of underachievement and abject failure can convince him otherwise.
