The Washington Commanders' schedule release was a source of great excitement for fans. And for Emmanuel Forbes Jr., it gave the cornerback a confirmed date about when his potential date for revenge will arrive.
The Commanders will welcome the Super Bowl hopeful Los Angeles Rams to Northwest Stadium in Week 9. It's at 1 p.m. Eastern Time and airing live on FOX. It's also the first chance Forbes has had to go against his old employers since being unceremoniously removed from the equation.
And it didn't take long for Forbes to offer a veiled swipe at the Commanders on social media once the schedule was confirmed.
"Get back don't have a date!"
Commanders will have much bigger problems than Emmanuel Forbes in Week 9
Washington was absolutely correct to dispose of Forbes way ahead of time. The apple of previous head coach Ron Rivera's eye before and during the 2023 NFL Draft failed to make an impact. He was dangerously undersized, bullied by NFL-caliber wide receivers, and the Commanders' confidence in his outlook diminished significantly.
When general manager Adam Peters didn't see the correct improvements, Forbes was waived. And the fact that nobody was willing to trade a draft pick to take him off Washington's hands spoke volumes.
Forbes landed on the Los Angeles Rams. There were brief flashes of promise last season, but opposing teams still targeted him as a weak link with great success. And considering the moves made by the NFC West club to improve its cornerback options this offseason, the Mississippi State product may not even be on the field all that much when he returns to Washington.
The Rams traded for Trent McDuffie. They signed his former Kansas City Chiefs teammate, Jaylen Watson, in free agency. That will be their new starting option on the boundary, so what that means for Forbes' future is anyone's guess.
Washington won't be worried about that. They are focused on getting their own house in order, making the improvements needed after winning just five games during the previous campaign. But if Forbes does play meaningful reps when the Rams come to town, the Commanders will know precisely how to exploit his glaring weaknesses.
Forbes obviously feels some type of way about the way he was traded in Washington. But simply put, the performances were not good enough, and the decision to select him over Christian Gonzalez was one of Rivera's most egregious draft choices by a considerable margin.
Revenge is a good motivator. Forbes believes he has a ton of that. But when the Commanders start preparing for the Rams in Week 9, they will have much bigger problems to worry about.
