The Washington Commanders' offense will look a lot different in 2026 with David Blough taking over coordinator duties, and not just scheme-wise.
As is always the case when there are coaching staff changes, new coordinators want to bring in players with whom they've already developed chemistry. Under Blough, the Commanders should expect to target some former Detroit Lions in free agency this spring.
One of them is a wide receiver option who could potentially spice up the passing attack, while also adding significant value on special teams.
Kalif Raymond could add some creativity to the Commanders' offense
Kalif Raymond is a nine-year NFL veteran who made several stops before finding a home with the Lions over the past four seasons. Blough was on Detroit's roster in both 2021 and 2023, though he did not attempt a regular-season pass in either year.
Raymond is a quick and speedy wideout who was named a second-team All-Pro as a punt returner in 2022. He's a free agent this summer, and John Portis of SB Nation named the versatile pass-catcher as someone the Commanders could take a look at if Detroit lets him test the market.
"Raymond still offers value as a versatile wide receiver that can play the X, Y, and slot roles in Ben Johnson’s offense and be a plus in the return game. Raymond is not the WR2 Washington’s offense desperately needs, but with a projected one-year salary of $3.45 million, the veteran wide receiver would offer a cheap replacement for Deebo Samuel and a safe floor if Jaylin Lane fails to take the next step."John Portis, SB Nation
Raymond probably wouldn't play punt return duties for Washington, given that Jaylin Lane had an outstanding rookie season in the role. But he could be a maneuverable chess piece in Blough's system, coming in situationally and moving the needle for the Commanders, especially if Deebo Samuel Sr. is not retained.
Raymond will be 32 years old when the 2026 campaign begins, an age that Adam Peters should be trying to avoid this offseason in favor of developing homegrown prospects and free agents fresh off their rookie deals. But as long as Washington isn't trusting him to carry too heavy a load, he is an ideal low-risk option who can help make life easier for Jayden Daniels and the offense.
The Commanders will be assessing no shortage of options when free agency gets underway. Don't be surprised if Raymond's name comes up.
