There are more twists to come among the Washington Commanders' coaching staff. Massive alterations will arrive once Dan Quinn settles on his new defensive coordinator. However, those in power will be anxiously awaiting further updates, as one of their last remaining offensive coaches with legitimate experience has drawn an alluring glance from elsewhere.
The Commanders took a massive leap of faith by promoting David Blough to replace Kliff Kingsbury as offensive coordinator. Two more promotions have also occurred in-house, which speaks to the desire for alignment alongside fresh schematic ideas.
It's a gamble that could go either way. And the Commanders may have to move forward without Anthony Lynn, who is being coveted by the Buffalo Bills after their decision to fire Sean McDermott.
Commanders must prepare for anything as Bills make Anthony Lynn approach
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Bills will interview Lynn for their head-coaching vacancy on Saturday. The senior insider also touted how close he was to getting the job in Buffalo before it eventually went to McDermott in 2017.
"Former Bills assistant head coach and current Commanders run game coordinator Anthony Lynn — a finalist for the Buffalo head coaching job in 2017 that went to Sean McDermott — is scheduled to interview for the Bills head coach job Saturday, per a league source. Back in 2017, Lynn landed the Chargers head coaching job instead and posted a 33-31 record in the midst of the team’s relocation to LA. Since then, Lynn has studied under coaches such as Dan Campbell, Kyle Shanahan and Dan Quinn."Adam Schefter
Lynn has gained a lot of experience under some top coaches since then. He's also been a head coach himself with the Los Angeles Chargers. The Bills may be looking for a proven figure to lead the charge with their Super Bowl window still open, although current Buffalo offensive coordinator Joe Brady remains the favorite to take the job.
The Commanders must have contingencies in place if Lynn does enough to secure the job. There is a long way to go before that scenario, so time is on their side for now. Nothing came of the speculation linking the coach to Penn State, but this has a lot more substance attached.
The Bills clearly think highly of Lynn, given how he was in strong contention for their job previously. Others are being considered, with interview requests already going to Brian Daboll and Lou Anarumo. Even so, the Commanders must be ready for anything.
The last thing Blough probably wants is Lynn departing the Commanders before his first season as a play-caller. But it's a lot likelier than you might think.
