Commanders draft OJ Frederique Jr.

  • Cornerback | Miami Hurricanes
  • Round No. 2 | Pick No. 43

The Washington Commanders have cornerback problems right now. If not for the sensational start to the campaign from free-agent signing Amik Robertson, things would look even worse for this group.

Trey Amos is still on injured reserve. Mike Sainristil is free-falling and cannot be trusted. Rasul Douglas and Fabian Moreau are serviceable, but they are only on one-year deals.

Though the Commanders have spent two second-round picks on corners throughout the Adam Peters era, that should stop him from swinging for the fences again. And if OJ Frederique Jr. makes it into Day 2, the general manager should think long and hard about the possibility.

Frederique is a fluid mover. He has exceptional recovery skills and is a tricky proposition to beat in man coverage. The Miami Hurricanes' star must add some muscle mass when he gets to the pros, but there is a lot to like about his outlook.

Commanders draft Braelin Moore

  • Center | LSU Tigers
  • Round No. 3 | Pick No. 75

The Commanders' plan at center has fallen flat, which isn't surprising to fans skeptical of the approach. Nick Allegretti hasn't played well, and if Lucas Patrick has another strong game as the Week 4 anchor, he might not get his place back.

Matt Gulbin was drafted in the sixth round, but he's a development project. The Commanders have to address this spot with the urgency it deserves next offseason, and the best way to get a long-term option is through the draft.

One could make a strong case for the Commanders drafting a center much higher, but that's a conversation for another day. In this scenario, Braelin Moore is someone worth examining in greater detail.

Moore is an exceptional pass protector. His lower body matches his upper body, and he wastes very few movements. He's explosive to the point of contact, and despite not having elite range, the LSU product has all the tools to be a very good starter at the next level.

Commanders draft Ryan Wingo

  • Wide Receiver | Texas Longhorns
  • Round No. 4 | Pick No. 110

Adding another wide receiver should be a top priority for the Commanders in 2027. Terry McLaurin is aging, and Stefon Diggs only signed a one-year deal. Hopes are high for third-round rookie Antonio Williams, but the rest are on the fringes or facing uncertain futures.

Adam Peters could look to free agency or even a trade if the right opportunity presents itself. But if Ryan Wingo makes it into the fourth round, he is a gamble worth making.

Wingo is a frustrating player. He has all the physical and athletic tools you look for in a high-level wideout in the pros, but his consistency and concentration need significant improvement before his confidence increases.

The Texas prospect makes the ridiculous look routine. Other times, Wingo inexcusably drops layups, making him a feast-or-famine player who could be anything.

But if the Commanders bring him on board and work out the problem areas of his game, Wingo could be a steal of epic proportions.
