Commanders 7-round 2025 NFL mock draft: Bye week dilemmas edition
By Dean Jones
The Washington Commanders are in a healthy long-term situation. Things are progressing better than anticipated for the team in Year 1 of Adam Peters' drastic rebuild. How the general manager navigates the upcoming offseason could propel this sleeping giant back into contention.
Dan Quinn's remarkable culture shift has the Commanders sitting at 8-5 on their long-awaited bye week. They have a firm grasp of the seventh seed regardless of how results go during the team's extended rest period. Regardless of whether they make the postseason or not, the foundations for a more prosperous future have been laid.
This could continue during the offseason. The Commanders have almost $100 million in salary-cap space to spend on free-agent reinforcements and contract extensions. They also have seven selections during the 2025 NFL Draft despite giving up capital to acquire stud cornerback Marshon Lattimore.
If Peters can hit on the majority of picks in his second draft at the helm, the Commanders will be in good shape. Using the Pro Football Network simulator, we took a look at how Washington could approach matters in our latest 2025 mock draft.
Commanders 7-round 2025 NFL mock draft at the bye week
Commanders draft Ashton Jeanty
- Running Back | Boise State Broncos
- Round No. 1 | Pick No. 21
Taking running backs in the first round of the draft is a dying ethos around the league. However, Ashton Jeanty is different.
This would be a luxury pick by the Washington Commanders given their needs elsewhere. They'll change depending on which players are acquired in free agency. If general manager Adam Peters can find the right reinforcements, there could be room to take a home-run swing with one of the most gifted playmakers in next year's class.
The Commanders have Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler as their running back tandem currently. Both are out of contract in 2026 and the veteran's serious concussion is a testament to the short shelf-life of players in the backfield. This was recently highlighted by Dane Brugler from The Athletic, who thought Washington was a decent landing spot for Jeanty if the Dallas Cowboys don't take him beforehand.
Jeanty is a legitimate game-changer. His size, speed, and vision are NFL-ready right now. The Boise State prospect boasts elite contact balance and enough breakaway speed to turn small holes into large gains. There's also a lot to like about his pass-catching prowess and improving blocking to further raise intrigue.
Putting Jeanty alongside rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is a tantalizing proposition. Whether the Commanders pull the trigger if the prospect is available when they go on the clock is another matter.
