The Washington Commanders have been incredibly active throughout free agency so far. Fans were expecting nothing less, and general manager Adam Peters is delivering the goods with a ruthless shift in his recruitment approach.
Defense has been the priority, and rightfully so. Peters has also scoured the veteran pool for extra offensive firepower. And the front office probably didn't have to convince Jayden Daniels' former college teammate, Rachaad White, too strongly to join this ambitious project.
White reunites with Daniels in Washington on a one-year deal. With Chris Rodriguez Jr. leaving for the Jacksonville Jaguars, he'll immediately go into a feature role alongside the signal-caller and Jacory Croskey-Merritt in the backfield. And one Tampa Bay Buccaneers expert gave an assessment on the dual-threat weapon that will only raise excitement among the fan base.
Buccaneers expert's Rachaad White take will raise excitement among Commanders fans
Josh Hill of The Pewter Plank thought the early career comparisons to Christian McCaffrey still carry weight. White's inability to gain hard yards in between the tackles was a problem, but he also thought there remains potential to be among the league's best backs if everything clicks.
"So much has been rightfully made about Bucky Irving taking over in Tampa Bay that it's easy to forget how highly Rachaad White was talked about. It wasn't that long ago that he was being directly compared to Christian McCaffrey, and that still holds up. He's a dual-threat who excels as a pass-catching back with the ability to leave a defense in the dust when he hits the open field.
"One flaw he had with the Bucs was an inability to be an effective short-yardage back, specifically in third-down situations, but that's also not his specialty. He helped take one of the worst run games in the entire league and turn it into a Top 5 unit; in the right scenario, he's a sleeper to be one of the best backs in the NFL."
If Commanders fans weren't excited before, they should be now.
Perhaps the franchise will still seek a more physical running back at some stage. But if new offensive coordinator David Blough can find the key to maximize White's skill set, and the player's chemistry with Daniels returns quickly, this could be a home run signing when it's all said and done.
White is a dynamic difference-maker. He runs with urgency and is immensely difficult to catch in the open field. With Daniels also boasting exceptional rushing capabilities, it'll be a nightmare for opposing defenses. If further reinforcements arrive in the wide receiver room and the offensive line interior adds some quality, Blough will have everything he needs to silence his doubters.
The hype is already building around White. Let's hope he can deliver.
