When running back Brian Robinson Jr. wasn't quite fitting into the team's way of thinking last offseason, general manager Adam Peters recognized the situation for what it was. When rookie sensation Jacory Croskey-Merritt took the team by storm, the writing was firmly on the wall.

The Commanders got something back for Robinson, trading him to the San Francisco 49ers. It was only a sixth-round pick, but it was better than nothing for a player entering the final year of his rookie deal and would have likely left for nothing.

As it turned out, this trade also helped the Commanders land a massive steal on Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Commanders spend Brian Robinson trade pick on center Matt Gulbin

The Niners eventually sent over the No. 209 pick for Robinson. He backed up Christian McCaffrey last season and didn't do enough for an extended stay. Now, the former Alabama standout has signed with the Atlanta Falcons, while the Commanders spent the pick they received on Michigan State center Matt Gulbin.

This is a high-value selection. Gulbin was touted by some analysts as a potential fourth-round selection. He made it all the way down to the sixth. Although that brings some concern, Peters was clearly satisfied enough to take a swing at someone who was evidently being completely overlooked before Washington came calling.

There will be fire in his gut as a result. There is hard work ahead. But considering the Commanders picked Gulbin with the choice they got from San Francisco for Robinson, it represents a free hit either way.

Robinson was a solid player. He overcame significant adversity before even stepping onto the field after being drafted in the third round, which required tremendous resolve. While he was never an elite backfield option, he brought physicality in between the tackles and a never-say-die attitude that was hard not to love.

Now, he's getting the chance to showcase these credentials in Atlanta, where he will be backing up another stud in Bijan Robinson. That might be his new role moving forward, but it might be the best way to prolong his career.

As for the Commanders? They have a crowded running back room. Thanks to Robinson, they also have Gulbin, who could sneak into an important role much sooner than fans expect.

If that scenario comes to fruition, trading Robinson will be right up there with one of Peters' best plays since taking charge of Washington's front office.

That's a win-win for everybody.
