There has been a lot said about the San Francisco 49ers' stance on Brandon Aiyuk. They have drawn their line in the sand, and if the Washington Commanders are intent on bringing the wide receiver to the franchise, all they can do is wait.
However, holding Aiyuk hostage — if that's what you want to call it — could have an ulterior motive, according to one Niners insider with close knowledge of the situation.
Matt Barrows of The Athletic believes San Francisco holding onto Aiyuk for as long as possible could be a ploy to pile additional pressure on the Commanders. If quarterback Jayden Daniels is clamoring for this move, as reported, delaying his release could force general manager Adam Peters' hand. That would involve giving up a late-round draft pick and taking on his contract.
49ers' stance could be designed to pile pressure on Commanders over Brandon Aiyuk
And the longer Aiyuk is still under contract in San Francisco, the more nervous Barrows believes the Commanders will get.
"The longer he is held “hostage” -- I think it puts pressure on the Commanders. If the Commanders are in fact counting on or thinking about having Brandon Aiyuk as part of their wide-receiving core -- and they do need to add another receiver in Washington -- the longer you hold him, the more nervous I think the Commanders get.
"They want that to happen sooner rather than later and if the 49ers are holding on to him, maybe that is an impetus to get a deal done.”
The Commanders are not pushing all their chips into the middle for Aiyuk. They are turning their attention towards the 2026 NFL Draft. There are also several intriguing options remaining on the veteran pool, including the possibility of re-signing Deebo Samuel Sr. if the money works.
Would Aiyuk be nice? Sure. Is he worth the Commanders backing themselves into a corner for? Absolutely not.
Everyone remains under the illusion that Aiyuk will reunite with Daniels in Washington at some stage. That might be in June. It might be just before Week 1. But according to reports, it will not be via trade. There are simply too many red flags attached, no matter what really went down between the player and San Francisco over the last year.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch are clearly bitter. They are not going to gift-wrap him to the Commanders, even if that remains the likeliest outcome. Holding onto him delays the inevitable, so this all comes down to how badly Washington wants him in the building and how long the club is willing to wait before it goes past the point of no return.
That might be a long while yet, so fans should strap themselves in for a long ride.
