Blockbuster Maxx Crosby-Commanders trade idea doesn't make sense anymore

The timeline has shifted.

Adam Peters has made some bold trades since joining the Washington Commanders. Some have paid off handsomely, but a couple have fallen by the wayside.

That didn't stop one NFL analyst from touting the idea that the general manager will make another blockbuster splash when the 2026 offseason arrives.

Speculation is running rampant around the league about Maxx Crosby's future with the Las Vegas Raiders. The AFC West club opted to sit the player down for their final two games, citing a knee injury that will reportedly require surgery after the campaign. That didn't sit well with the prolific edge rusher, and rumors are swirling about a possible trade in the not-too-distant future.

Commanders analyst touts wild Maxx Crosby trade proposal that doesn't fit the new timeline

There would be a queue of suitors across the NFL if the Raiders made him available, and the price would be substantial. Most fans believe the Commanders should be in the business of stockpiling picks to preserve their long-term future. Nick Ashooh from The Team 980 held a different opinion.

The analyst thought that trading two first-round selections and defensive tackle Daron Payne for Crosby was a move the Commanders should make. The draft comes with risk, and a player with 69.5 career sacks represents a sure thing.

"Give the Raiders two first-round picks and Daron Payne, because Daron Payne might be traded this offseason anyway. If it takes a first-round pick this year and a first-round pick next year and Daron Payne, I'd do it. There are times when draft picks work, and there are times where they matter. And there are times where it's better that you get the guy that you know what he can do on the field. Because you ain't getting a Maxx Crosby in this draft right now, that you know, guaranteed, will translate to the NFL."

This sounds nice, and if the Commanders had done a little bit better this season, it would no doubt come into the discussion. Sadly, that's not the case, and going all-in for someone like Crosby — regardless of how good he is or what he could bring — only piles more pressure on Washington to enter the Super Bowl picture in 2026.

Trading for Crosby — or anyone else, for that matter — no longer fits into the Commanders' timeline. There needs to be some consolidation with the future in mind. That doesn't mean waving the white flag on any big dreams, but it's time for Peters to start building the right way.

That involves finding younger, dynamic, and cheap players through the draft. Peters can be aggressive in free agency with plenty of money to spend, but relying on one-year deals for aging veterans is no longer an option.

And giving up a king's ransom for Crosby is even less likely.
