The Washington Commanders have regressed severely this season, despite most expecting this upstart contender to challenge for the Super Bowl once again. But even though things haven't gone well, one NFL analyst pointed to the New England Patriots as a reason for encouraging heading into a critical offseason for general manager Adam Peters.
Washington pushed its chips into the middle, and they were right to do so. The Commanders reached the final four last time out. There was a need to be more aggressive to maximize quarterback Jayden Daniels' rookie contract. Unfortunately, injuries, aging players who were a step too slow, and younger players with breakout promise falling flat contributed significantly to their demise.
Peters has a lot of hard work ahead this offseason. Some complex challenges must be solved effectively, and the front-office leader won't get every decision correct. Pressure is building to get things trending back in the right direction, but the next few months will be incredibly telling.
NFL analyst believes Commanders can turn things around quickly with a strong offseason
Zachary Perelus from CBS Sports acknowledged that the Commanders have a daunting task ahead of them. But if Peters can secure a free agency haul and make the most of his draft picks, Washington could be in line for a bounce-back year in 2026.
"The Commanders are projected to have over $60 million in effective cap space this offseason, sixth-most in the NFL, and their first draft pick -- which will be in the top 10 -- is of paramount importance. While they are without some later draft picks, they can focus on a significant free-agent haul, a group that can help now and in the future. Washington GM Adam Peters has a big offseason ahead, one full of both great power and great responsibility. Washington and [Jayden] Daniels may have been two of the league's biggest disappointments this year. That doesn't preclude either from bouncing back in 2025."Zachary Perelus
Perelus also used the Patriots as an example of how quickly things can turn. They got a new head coach, improved protection in front of quarterback Drake Maye, and found the veteran pieces needed in free agency to give their rebuild the best possible early boost. They went from an also-ran to the playoffs, and they could even secure the AFC's No. 1 seed when it's all said and done.
The Commanders have been nowhere near the playoffs this year, but all long-term hope is not lost by any stretch. Peters has some cornerstones to build around. He's got a franchise quarterback and left tackle. The offensive line is a bright spot, and hopefully, wide receiver Terry McLaurin can stay clear of the frustrating injury problems that have blighted his 2025 season.
Defensively, it's a mess, and this will be urgently addressed. If Peters can find the necessary upgrades, don't count the Commanders out.
