Adam Peters is light on draft assets, at least in the first four rounds. The Washington Commanders only have two selections, one at No. 7 overall and the other at No. 71. Not exactly ideal, but it was the price they were willing to pay for an elite left tackle in Laremy Tunsil.
Trading down is a possibility. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reaffirmed his stance that there could be movement, with the Dallas Cowboys reportedly considering a potential surge up the order for one of the top defensive prospects. The Kansas City Chiefs are another team to watch, but whether anything becomes concrete is another matter.
Peters revealed at the annual league meeting that he does not expect the phone to ring off the hook. He'll consider any offer, but he won't count on them arriving. This sentiment was echoed by Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, who offered additional insight into what might unfold on the big night.
NFL insider confirms Adam Peters' thoughts on Commanders' draft trade down
The senior insider named several teams that were already looking to trade down, including the Commanders. However, finding a willing partner would be difficult, with more activity expected in the mid-rounds than at the top end.
"Teams picking behind the Jets are looking to move down. Count the Cardinals, Titans, Giants, Browns and Commanders among those already looking at trying to drop down in the order to accumulate capital. The problem for those five is finding teams to move up.
"At this point, for teams picking that high, it’s going to be challenging to find partners to move into that range. It’s more likely that we’ll get more movement in the middle of the first round than we do at the top of it."
This is a realistic outlook. The Commanders will not be doing business with Dallas, given the bitter history between these NFC East rivals. That narrows down the possibilities even more, so Peters may be forced to stand pat and take the best prospect available at No. 7.
Just who'll be around when it's Washington's turn to pick is anyone's guess. Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza will go No. 1 to the Las Vegas Raiders. The New York Jets have narrowed it down to David Bailey and Arvell Reese, according to reports. After that, nobody has the first idea, which only adds to the fascination.
Peters may want to trade back. Unfortunately for him, it's a supply and demand situation, and the lack of blue-chip quarterbacks in this class will make it extremely difficult to get an offer he'd be willing to accept.
Besides, finding an elite-level prospect will be far more beneficial.
