Adam Peters has a massive decision he cannot afford to get wrong at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Washington Commanders don't pick again until the third round after that, so the general manager must find a blue-chip prospect capable of becoming a franchise cornerstone.
Much will depend on what goes on in front of them, but there should be several intriguing options available. There are about four or five prospects heavily linked to Washington, but there is just no telling how things will go. Even Peters acknowledged the significant uncertainty in the top 10 this year, given that only one quarterback is projected to be selected.
The stakes are immensely high. Nothing should be off the table, but there is one prospect that represents too big a gamble that high up the order.
Commanders shouldn't consider taking Makai Lemon at No. 7 overall
Peters rightfully focused his attention on defensive reinforcements in free agency. That may continue during the draft, but there is a need to find quarterback Jayden Daniels more productivity at the wide receiver position to improve Washington's chances.
Carnell Tate is a hot name, but the Ohio State prospect might not be around at No. 7. The Commanders are also reportedly hosting USC standout Makai Lemon on a pre-draft visit. Still, taking him in the top 10 would be a gamble of epic proportions.
Lemon is a playmaker; there's no getting away from that. Whether he's got WR1 capabilities without being the most explosive athlete is the big question. And with the No. 7 pick, that's what the Commanders could be expecting long term.
Most analysts project Lemon to be more of a slot receiver than a prolific boundary threat in the pros. There is versatility, of course, but wideouts who do their best work in the slot don't tend to be taken so high in the order.
His physical measurements may prove complicated. Lemon's hands are assured, and he thrives in the big occasions. But the Commanders need a sure thing in the first round this year, and there are too many questions attached to justify this sort of bold selection.
This is a deep draft class for receivers. The Commanders could wait a little longer before finding someone to replace Deebo Samuel Sr. as the slot force Daniels needs. There's also the remaining veteran pool if Peters isn't entirely satisfied.
As for Lemon? He's a lock to go in the first round. But make no mistake; taking him at No. 7 is way too high.
