Commanders could hire Grant Udinski

One problem facing the Washington Commanders if they fire head coach Dan Quinn is the NFL's offensive well being tapped out in recent years. Everyone is looking for the next big thing. Options who call plays are now thin on the ground, so general manager Adam Peters may have to think outside the box and take a big risk in pursuit of progress.

Grant Udinski is only 30. He doesn't call plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars, but that didn't stop the offensive coordinator from getting some interviews during the 2026 cycle. And given how the AFC South club is performing so far this season, interest could be even stronger next time around.

Udinski has a background in Kevin O'Connell's offense, who is another descendant of the Mike Shanahan tree off the Sean McVay branch. He's highly respected in Jacksonville, helping quarterback Trevor Lawrence fulfill his potential and becoming a trusted asset as Liam Coen's right-hand man.

Someone will give him a shot one day. That might be the Commanders.

Commanders could hire Nate Scheelhaase

Sean McVay is widely regarded as Washington's one that got away. He left his role as offensive coordinator to become the Los Angeles Rams head coach and went on to achieve great things, including a Super Bowl triumph.

McVay isn't walking through the door. But maybe bringing someone in from his staff could be the next best way to make a better go of things if Dan Quinn's services are no longer needed.

Nate Scheelhaase would be the likeliest candidate in this scenario.

He's spent the last three years working under McVay and now holds the offensive coordinator position. He also doesn't call plays, but learning under McVay is the best possible tutelage before potentially landing a top job.

This is a high-risk, high-reward appointment if Washington went down this route. But if Quinn's experience doesn't work out, then taking a swing with someone younger is a definite possibility.

Commanders could hire Brian Flores

The Commanders made a bold bid to acquire Brian Flores as their new defensive coordinator during the offseason. It was ambitious, but the coach did sit down with those in power for an interview. He re-upped with the Minnesota Vikings instead, leading Washington to his right-hand man, Daronte Jones.

If Dan Quinn is let go, Flores would probably be much more receptive to the main job in Washington. Joining as a defensive coordinator would have been a sideways move, but this represents a promotion.

Flores' defensive play-calling is getting significant praise again this season. The Vikings are 5-0 and have been relentless on defense, wreaking havoc on every quarterback in their path with a unique blend of aggression and opportunism that is hard to replicate.

Even though Flores is still involved in a lawsuit against the NFL, that won't bother Josh Harris. And if he has the right plan for Washington's offense, he could be the guy.
