John Bates - Commanders TE
Chig Okonkwo won't be available for the Washington Commanders in Week 2. The promising tight end injured his hamstring against the Philadelphia Eagles and couldn't shake it off in time, missing every practice leading up to the clash.
It's a blow, especially considering how much Okonkwo was expected to help in the passing game. Others have to step up and fill the void, which could mean more responsibilities for John Bates.
While Bates' role as a blocker is vital to the team, Okonkwo's absence should give him chances to thrive as a pass-catcher. Ben Sinnott could also feature, but it's clear that there are still some trust issues preventing him from becoming a prominent part of David Blough's plans.
Jayden Daniels will need a security blanket across the middle in Dallas, especially if the offensive line cannot meet its end of the bargain. Bates can help, but it'll be interesting to see how he copes as the TE1.
Leo Chenal - Commanders LB
The Commanders won't have Frankie Luvu to depend on in Dallas. After missing practice all week with a groin injury, the veteran linebacker will be watching from the sidelines. Though disappointing, it's why general manager Adam Peters worked so hard to improve depth this offseason.
This brings Leo Chenal firmly under the microscope.
The free-agent signing was a rotational presence in Week 1 behind Luvu and first-round rookie Sonny Styles. When he did get more involved, it was an indifferent showing, so he'll need much more in a more prominent role.
With Jordan Magee also absent after being placed on injured reserve, the Commanders' linebacker depth is already being tested. Chenal won't be coming off the field much in Dallas, so he must improve his positional sense and communicate more effectively with Styles pre-snap.
The Cowboys have a potent offense that can put up points quickly. But if Chenal can make his presence felt, Daronte Jones' defense may not miss Luvu all that much.
Jayden Daniels - Commanders QB
Jayden Daniels' performance against the Eagles was mixed. The quarterback struggled to find a rhythm in the opening exchanges, which isn't surprising given he missed a lot of football last year and is working in a new offensive scheme. But his fourth-quarter surge showed the kind of player he is.
Daniels found his groove, almost dragging the Commanders to a memorable upset. They fell agonizingly short, but the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft can have even greater success against the Cowboys' defense this weekend.
Despite significant personnel changes and a new coordinator in Christian Parker, the Cowboys' defense looks like the same moribund unit that was among the league's worst last season. If their problems continue, Daniels will give them similar headaches.
His mobility, accuracy, and ability to push the football downfield when needed can give Dallas' defense untold problems. Daniels must deliver.
