Jake Moody - Commanders PK

The Washington Commanders gave veteran kicker Jake Moody a new one-year deal this offseason. However, they were not going to give him a free run at the starting job once again.

Adam Peters wanted to raise competition across the board. Moody wasn't exempt from this strategy, and even though he still has a chance to make the team, he'll have to fight with everything he has to keep Drew Stevens from taking the role.

Stevens initially received an invite to Washington's rookie minicamp. When he received interest from elsewhere, this became a formal contract. Looking at the strong start he made over offseason workouts, it looks like a shrewd move.

Head coach Dan Quinn said the race was too close to call right now, and the Commanders will likely take it right through the preseason before making a decision. Stevens has caught the eye, but his presence is also bringing out more from Moody.

This one could legitimately go either way.

Trent Scott - Commanders OL

The Commanders have a good offensive line. It'll be a very good one if Nick Allegretti can man the center spot effectively after the shocking release of Tyler Biadasz.

Things look pretty settled, though there is a genuine competition brewing at left guard between Chris Paul and Brandon Coleman. One of those will be added to the depth, which also includes Andrew Wylie and sixth-round rookie Matt Gulbin, who'll likely sit behind Allegretti before potentially filling the void long-term.

Trent Scott is also still around. He's got versatility and experience, which is valuable for any backup. However, the limitations when given reps are obvious at this relatively late stage of his playing career.

Washington has several young linemen looking to unseat Scott. Timothy McKay, Julian Good-Jones, and undrafted rookie Tanoa Togiai will be eager to impress, so the former Grambling State mauler has to keep them at arm's length to book his place on the squad again.

Shy Tuttle - Commanders DL

Daronte Jones is projected to switch the Commanders' defense to a 3-4 base front. The trenches will be integral to any success that comes Washington's way, but there is hope that a change in philosophy can bring more from the options available.

The Commanders will likely start Daron Payne, Javon Kinlaw, and free-agent signing Tim Settle Jr. All three are huge bodies capable of eating up space and absorbing blockers for others to do damage. Big things are also expected of Johnny Newton, who's worked exceptionally hard over the offseason in readiness for more involvement.

Behind the quartet is where it gets more concerning. Washington's depth options don't look especially promising, though D.J. Davidson's smooth transition to the club could see him land a spot on the 53-man roster.

Where that leaves Shy Tuttle is anyone's guess. The veteran was acquired late in the 2025 campaign after his departure from the Tennessee Titans. He got another one-year deal, but it looks like an uphill battle to make his presence felt this summer.
