There is nothing more any Washington Commanders player can do to improve their chances of staying part of the team's plans in some capacity. Preseason is done, and training camp is in the rearview mirror. Now, it's a nervous wait before their fates are decided.
General manager Adam Peters has already begun trimming the fat before Sunday's cut-down deadline. More than 1,100 players will be released around the league, so there is also a chance for Washington to strengthen problem areas on the waiver wire if someone of interest becomes available.
It's a difficult time of year.
Dreams end. Hopes are dashed. For some NFL hopefuls, this will be the crushing final blow to their aspirations. But for others set for the chop, all hope won't be lost.
Once the Commanders' initial 53-man roster is confirmed, Peters and head coach Dan Quinn have to decide on their practice squad. There could be a couple of new faces signed to the franchise, but the vast majority will have been part of the setup this summer without quite doing enough to make the team.
With this in mind, here are seven Commanders players who could be destined for the practice squad despite valiant attempts to make the roster in recent months.

Robert Henry Jr. - Commanders RB
There was a lot to like about the way running back Robert Henry Jr. applied himself this summer. The undrafted rookie came into the franchise with lofty ambitions to force a difficult conversation in a crowded room. Even though he put up a tremendous fight, it may not be enough to secure his spot on the 53-man roster.
The Commanders will be led in the backfield by Jscory Croskey-Merritt and Rachaad White. Sixth-round rookie Kaytron Allen has found life difficult in the preseason, but Washington is not going to cut him so early into his development. Much will depend on the severity of Jeremy McNichols' injury problem, but he also stands a good chance if healthy.
That would leave Henry out of luck, at least initially. But his efforts throughout Washington's preparations for the new campaign more than justify a place on the practice squad to continue his encouraging development.
Previously, this would have been considered an achievement for Henry. He was probably hoping for more, but staying in familiar surroundings provides a sense of stability. And with McNichols' injury status uncertain, he could even get a few early call-ups until the veteran is ready to return.
And if he shines, maybe something more permanent could be in the offing a little further down the line.
