Commanders running backs

We'll put all the Washington Commanders' running backs together, since there is no telling who will suit up this week.

Jacory Croskey-Merritt missed the first two days of practice. Austin Ekeler and Rachaad White have both been wearing non-contact jerseys, so they likely aren't at 100 percent. That leaves veteran Jeremy McNichols, who's looking to feature for the first time this season after a spell on injured reserve.

Not exactly ideal, but the Commanders will have to make the best of it.

And whoever is toting the rock will have to deal with All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner.

Warner has made a successful return from injury this season. He hasn't lost a step, reaffirming his status as one of the league's best linebackers. He's already at 50 tackles, and his astonishing 93.1 run-defense grade from Pro Football Focus ranks first league-wide.

Being banged up is an excuse, but the Commanders might struggle to gain yards on the ground unless quarterback Jayden Daniels breaks contain.

Brandon Coleman - Commanders OT

The Commanders might have defensive end Nick Bosa to worry about in Week 6. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the prolific pass-rusher is making good progress, though it's still too early to tell whether he can feature at Levi's Stadium.

Regardless of whether Bosa suits up, this looks like another difficult assignment for left tackle Brandon Coleman.

Coleman has not performed well this season. Everyone expected a transition period after the TCU product was thrust back onto the blindside, and the growing pains are evident. But for the first time, the New York Giants actively targeted him as a weak link.

That will not have gone unnoticed by the Niners. If it's not Bosa, then expect Keion White to spend a lot of time attacking Coleman. And wiith three sacks in his first five games, he will fancy his chances of a profitable evening.

If there was ever a time for Coleman to step up, this is it.

Amik Robertson - Commanders CB

Amik Robertson has been an absolute sensation this season. Few cornerbacks in the league are playing better, and the Commanders have desperately needed this stability at an important time.

Robertson now has a big enough sample size to suggest he can continue this outstanding form for the entire campaign. The Commanders are getting more help with the possible return of Trey Amos, but he's missed a lot of football. That means the veteran will take on CB1 duties on the prime-time stage.

That would put him up against Mike Evans.

The future Pro Football Hall of Fame wideout has been a revelation in San Francisco. Evans was a one-man wrecking crew against the Seattle Seahawks, and he has quickly become quarterback Brock Purdy's favorite target.

Robertson will put up a good fight. However, this could be the first game where we see his physical limitations against the 6-foot-5, 231-pound pass-catcher.
