Most fans and insiders expected the Washington Commanders to be among the most active teams in the opening stages of free agency. The team was coming off a five-win campaign, had substantial salary-cap space, and a plethora of roster holes to fill, with a dire need to get younger across the board.
General manager Adam Peters duly delivered. The Commanders signed 12 new faces. They re-signed some key veterans to boost depth. Washington still has money to spend, but the squad looks a lot more promising now than it did when a dismal 2025 season mercifully concluded.
The hard work is not done, not by any stretch of the imagination. Peters can find more assets with his sick picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. Adding more veterans from the veteran pool should also be considered, depending on what opportunities present themselves.
There are some enticing names that have been overlooked so far. Teams are currently taking stock of what they have and what more they may need. The Commanders are no exception, so Peters has a good chance to strengthen the group to provide more flexibility when the draft rolls around.
With this in mind, here are seven free agents still looking for work the Commanders could sign right now to fix major holes.

Commanders could sign Jack Jones
The Washington Commanders shouldn't be satisfied with their cornerback options as things stand. Trey Amos and Mike Sainristil have been joined by free-agent signing Amik Robertson, but the cupboard is relatively bare aside from that. This won't go unnoticed by either Adam Peters or defensive coordinator Daronte Jones as plans for the new season gather pace.
Maybe the Commanders have someone like LSU prospect Mansoor Delane in mind at No. 7 overall in the draft. Even that might not be enough, so gambling on Jack Jones' skill set within their altered schematic concepts could be a risk worth taking.
Jones had some struggles in coverage with the Miami Dolphins last season. However, he is an excellent presence against the run and can also be utilized on blitzes with supreme effectiveness. If he is used correctly by Washington's new defensive play-caller, the 2022 third-round pick out of Arizona State could play a role in Washington.
This is also unlikely to cost the earth. The Commanders have the money to do almost whatever they want, but this time of free agency is all about finding potential bargains who can help in the short and long term.
Having just turned 28, Jones has more upside than most corners still on the proverbial scrapheap.
