Commanders could sign Charles Omenihu
Pressure breaks pipes. It also breaks NFL quarterbacks, and the Washington Commanders didn't generate nearly enough of it in 2025.
One can point to the injuries, but general manager Adam Peters gambled on veterans in the twilight of their careers, with minimal success. When Dorance Armstrong Jr.'s breakout ended abruptly, things completely unraveled. The fact that Von Miller was the team's sack leader with nine is a damning indictment of how things went.
This is something Peters must address this offseason urgently. Several new faces would be prudent. Finding an explosive pass-rusher in the draft is almost assured, but the veteran pool should have some capable options who could fill out the depth chart and potentially carve out important roles under new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones.
Charles Omenihu is an interesting free agent going under the radar. He spent the best part of two years working with Peters on the San Francisco 49ers, and he's been a steady rotational piece for the Kansas City Chiefs over the last three years. He's never attained more than seven sacks in any season, but his 34 pressures from 55 percent of defensive snaps in 2025 showcase his ability to get opposing quarterbacks off their spot.
It's easy to forget that Omenihu only recently turned 28, so this could be a cost-effective option to enhance the pass-rushing rotation if the Chiefs don't re-sign him.
Commanders could sign Azeez Al-Shaair
Changes could be coming to the Commanders' linebacking corps this offseason. Daronte Jones could be installing a 3-4 base defensive scheme that will be physical, explosive, and versatile. Looking at the personnel available, Adam Peters would be wise to seek upgrades to put his ambitious plans into action.
Bobby Wagner has been an exceptional presence on and off the field in Washington over the last two years. Unfortunately, his flaws were more exposed than ever in 2025. His lack of speed in isolation was a weak link that opposing offenses exploited. With the future Pro Football Hall of Famer entering free agency, there is a good chance he will either depart or retire.
Frankie Luvu and Jordan Magee should have parts to play. But if those in power decide more is needed, someone like Curtis Robinson could be a possible option.
Robinson was acquired when Peters held an influential position in the San Francisco 49ers' front office. He was used sparingly until this season, but an injury to Fred Warner gave him the opportunity he was looking for. If the Commanders are looking for a dependable performer with some much-needed momentum on his side, this could be a viable option for Washington's depth chart.
