Commanders could sign Trevon Diggs
The Washington Commanders resisted the temptation to draft a cornerback with one of their six picks. General manager Adam Peters didn't believe the value was there and went in different directions. Not forcing anything was a smart move, but that doesn't mean another move isn't required.
Washington has just Trey Amos, Mike Sainristil, Amik Robertson, and Ahkello Witherspoon as its primary cornerback options. Two are young and have promise, one is an undersized veteran, and the other is injury-prone. While Trevon Diggs isn't the most dependable health-wise, either, his previous connection to head coach Dan Quinn makes it a legitimate possibility at some stage.
Diggs' rise under Quinn culminated in All-Pro honors. The decline was just as steep after his old coach left for Washington. He was released by the Dallas Cowboys and struggled to fit in with the Green Bay Packers. He is still sitting on the proverbial scrapheap, so bringing him in for a look has merit.
Commanders could sign Harrison Smith
There is no telling for sure if Harrison Smith wants to continue his future Pro Football Hall of Fame career. The prolific safety is currently mulling his options, and he said an emotional farewell to the Minnesota Vikings at the end of the 2025 campaign. But if he does fancy a fresh challenge, the Commanders could be an intriguing landing spot.
Smith might not fit the old, vibrant defenders Washington has sought this offseason, but he is still playing well. More importantly, he has a prior connection to Commanders' defensive coordinator Daronte Jones from their time in Minnesota.
Adding Smith would give the Commanders a sounding board for other players on how to effectively maximize Jones' schematic concepts. He'd add leadership and would command instant respect. That sort of thing carries weight with head coach Dan Quinn, so it makes more sense than you think.
Commanders could sign Stefon Diggs
As previously mentioned, the Commanders could use another veteran wide receiver. Antonio Williams should help fill the void left by Deebo Samuel Sr., but the unit lacks legitimate productivity to go alongside Terry McLaurin.
Unless someone like Treylon Burks, Luke McCaffrey, Dyami Brown, or Jaylin Lane surges to unexpected levels of productivity, more is required. Again, the Brandon Auyuk situation looms large in Washington, but there is no telling for certain when the San Francisco 49ers will release him.
Adam Peters cannot get left short-handed. He needs to cover his bases, which could make Stefon Diggs an intriguing option. This would be an emotional homecoming for the Gaithersburg native, who would probably welcome a return to familiar surroundings at this late stage of his career.
Diggs would be nothing more than a short-term option, but he can still play. The wideout went over 1,000 receiving yards with the New England Patriots last season but was released due to some off-the-field distractions. That's a bit rich given what's unfolding with Mike Vrabel, and he'd be a dependable option for Jayden Daniels.
