Frankie Luvu - Commanders LB

After a sensational first season with the Washington Commanders, linebacker Frankie Luvu was unable to reach similar heights last time around. He wasn't alone in that regard, but at least there were mitigating circumstances attached to his regression.

The injury bug hit Washington more than any other team. This was especially evident in the pass-rush, which forced Luvu to spend the majority of his time on the edge. He wasn't comfortable, and the Commanders lost their inspirational, instinctive spark at the defensive second level. There wasn't another option, but things are changing now.

Daronte Jones has already outlined his intent to move Luvu back to his off-ball linebacker role within his system. He wants the second-team All-Pro to attack downhill, setting the tone for others to follow. There is also more dynamism around him after Leo Chenal joined in free agency.

All signs point to a bounce-back campaign from Luvu. Considering this is the last year of his deal in Washington, a strong response is critical.

Quan Martin - Commanders S

Everyone associated with the Commanders was expecting bigger things from Quan Martin in 2025. Even some in the national media were touting him as a potential breakout candidate after flashing in Year 2 of his professional career. As fans are well aware by now, it didn't go according to plan.

Martin failed to shine under the spotlight. The Commanders gradually phased him out down the stretch, which spoke volumes. They haven't given up hope yet, but Nick Cross' arrival and the promise of another safety potentially arriving during the 2026 NFL Draft throw his future into peril.

If the Commanders draft Caleb Downs at No. 7 overall, perhaps moving Martin into the nickel could be the spark that reignites his career. That would be the last roll of the dice, so the Illinois product must seize every opportunity that comes his way this summer.

Anything less, and a situation could emerge where Martin doesn't even make it to Week 1.

Dorance Armstrong Jr. - Commanders DE/OLB

The Commanders rightfully strengthened their edge rushing room this offseason. Odafe Oweh was the big splash. K'Lavon Chaisson is looking to build on his breakout 2025 campaign with the New England Patriots, and Charles Omenihu offers depth and versatility within Daronte Jones' projected schematic concepts.

There is also the fascinating return from injury of Dorance Armstrong Jr. to factor in. The former Kansas standout was in the midst of a breakout campaign before an ACL complication abruptly halted his momentum. The pass-rush was never the same after that, but things look a lot stronger now.

Armstrong isn't going away quietly, though. He's reportedly making good progress in his rehabilitation. If he can get back to his 2025 form, the Commanders' outlook will be even better on the defensive edge. But with one year remaining on his deal, it's a high-pressure situation that could legitimately go either way.
