Rasul Douglas - Commanders CB
As previously mentioned, the Washington Commanders injected a youth movement into the roster this offseason, but Adam Peters filled some holes with a couple of productive veterans who have the experience needed to hit the ground running. Every ambitious team needs the right balance, and head coach Dan Quinn's squad now has it.
After an offseason assessment, Peters decided that more was required in the cornerback room. He had the perfect candidate, acquiring Rasul Douglas on a one-year deal that could be worth up to $3.8 million with incentives.
Douglas is long and physical, and knows how to work in the press or in zone. This versatility will be key in defensive coordinator Daronte Jones' system, and the seamless transition the West Virginia product made throughout training camp only heightens optimism about what he can accomplish in Washington.
This is nothing more than a short-term stopgap, which is fine. But with Trey Amos' status a concern, Douglas' presence will be needed.
Sonny Styles - Commanders LB
Bobby Wagner's influence off the field only grew last season. But unfortunately for the future Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker, his on-field consistency started to regress.
The Commanders didn't bring Wagner back in free agency, which was the right call. This left them with a gaping void at the defensive second level, and with a little bit of luck along the way, Adam Peters got his hands on Sonny Styles.
The No. 7 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft has all the athletic measurables required. Styles' testing at the NFL Scouting Combine was historic, and the will to win is even greater. It's early days, but this has all the makings of a franchise cornerstone the Commanders can build around for the next decade.
Styles is still in an adjustment period. The overreactions to his preseason debut were astonishing for one series, but the Commanders have full trust that the Ohio State product will come through when it counts.
Odafe Oweh - Commanders OLB
Adam Peters made his top priority clear soon after the 2025 campaign concluded. The Commanders needed to generate more pressure on opposing quarterbacks, and the front-office leader wanted to be aggressive in achieving this objective.
Landing one of the biggest fish in free agency was a good place to start.
Odafe Oweh joined the ranks on a four-year, $96 million contract with a $26 million signing bonus and $68 million guaranteed. It was classed as an overpay by some analysts, but that is typically the case in free agency.
The Commanders won't care about the cost if Oweh has the impact expected. And based on his efforts throughout the summer, he looks set to be a game-changing addition.
Oweh is causing complete havoc. He overwhelmed the Miami Dolphins in joint practice, and he's giving Washington's edge protectors all they can handle. The Penn State product is dealing with a slight calf issue right now, but if he's on the field in Week 1, he's going to be a problem.
