Commanders could sign Alex Cappa

No team should ever settle when it comes to their offensive line. The Washington Commanders have some questions about the interior that must be answered. And if it all goes wrong, that's not going to look favorably on general manager Adam Peters' recruitment approach.

Sam Cosmi is cemented as the starting right guard, and he's one of the league's best when healthy. Nick Allegretti looks set to start at the center position after the Commanders released Tyler Biadasz. There is a genuine competition for the left guard role between Chris Paul and Brandon Coleman, which is reportedly too close to call right now.

In terms of depth, the Commanders have Trent Scott, Andrew Wylie, sixth-round rookie Matt Gulbin, and either Coleman or Paul. Not a bad collection of veterans, but another experienced figure will only help Washington's cause.

Alex Cappa is among the best available veterans if the Commanders look to bolster their depth and raise competition for places. The 2018 third-round pick has 119 starts in eight years. His consistency was sketchy last season with the Las Vegas Raiders. But as a rotational backup, there is some merit to bringing him on board.

This is unlikely to cost much, either.

Cappa is probably just looking for a shot at this stage of the offseason. The NFL is ruthless, and it can cast you aside quickly. But in Washington, there would be a real chance for the Humboldt State product to make the 53-man roster.

Commanders could sign Jonnu Smith

David Blough's offense is expected to feature the tight end position heavily. This will be integral to any success that comes Washington's way, and the signs over the offseason program suggest those around can all make a considerable impression.

Free-agent signing Chig Okonkwo looks the part, bringing more athleticism and explosiveness as Washington's new primary pass-catching option in the room. John Bates is an outstanding blocker who can make catches when required. Ben Sinnott, the 2024 second-round pick who became an afterthought under Kliff Kingsbury, could also be in line for a heavier workload.

With Colson Yankoff offering intriguing athleticism and special-teams prowess, that might be enough for the Commanders. But if those in power decide that another proven performer is needed to take things up a notch, Adam Peters could do far worse than examine Jonnu Smith's credentials in greater detail.

Smith may have underwhelmed production-wise compared to his physical attributes for most of his career. However, he's experienced, can make tough catches over the middle, is an effective blocker, and also brings after-the-catch credentials.

If the Commanders are intent on using multiple tight-end sets more frequently with Blough calling plays, having someone like this to call upon alongside the options already available cannot be dismissed entirely.

That wouldn't bode well for Sinnott's chances of increased involvement. But after a season that fell by the wayside, the time for half-measures is over.
