General manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn are now assessing where the roster stands and what additional moves may be needed. The Washington Commanders have money to spend if further acquisitions are required, and with the stakes so high heading into the 2026 campaign, that feels like a realistic possibility.

The Commanders' urgency was evident throughout their offseason program. From the franchise cornerstones to those on the fringes fighting for places, the mindset was clear. Last season's standards will not be tolerated going forward, and anyone not pulling their weight won't last long.

Peters is an aggressive roster builder. There was a concerted effort to get younger and more dynamic this offseason, but some experience is also vital if the Commanders want to bounce back. And though most of the squad seems set, a few tweaks may still be needed to raise confidence even further.

With this in mind, here are six free agents whom the Commanders could potentially target before training camp to fill some remaining voids.

Free agents who might make sense for the Washington Commanders before training camp

Commanders could sign Stefon Diggs

Let's get the most obvious one out of the way first.

Stefon Diggs is still a free agent, and the wide receiver made no secret about his desire to speak with the Commanders about a potential homecoming. Nothing has been arranged as yet, which indicates this interest is one-sided.

There is a lot to like about Diggs' fit in Washington. He remains highly productive. He wouldn't have to be the top dog with Terry McLaurin cemented as WR1. There is baggage, of course, but the former Maryland star still knows how to get open. And he's also developed a strong reputation for coming through when the lights are brightest.

Most around the league still believe Brandon Aiyuk will end up in Washington when he is eventually released by the San Francisco 49ers. That might suffice for Adam Peters, but Diggs is much more reliable on the field if the Commanders can keep him focused on football.

Commanders could sign Trevon Diggs

The Commanders have also been heavily connected to Trevon Diggs throughout the offseason. He's got a strong history with Dan Quinn from their time together with the Dallas Cowboys, and Washington isn't exactly blessed with outstanding cornerback options.

Sounds good, in theory. And if the Commanders were guaranteed to get the Diggs who turned into an All-Pro under Quinn's guidance, this would be a no-brainer. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case.

Diggs' decline has been drastic. He fell off dramatically when Quinn left for Washington, and the Cowboys let him go last season. The Green Bay Packers picked him up late in the campaign, but he failed to make any sort of impression and wasn't brought back.

The fact that Diggs is still looking for work speaks volumes. While the relationship with Quinn means it couldn't be dismissed entirely, one gets the sense that if this was going to happen, it would have by now.
