General manager Adam Peters didn't want anyone to get comfortable this offseason. The Washington Commanders no longer had that luxury after a five-win campaign in 2025, and the front-office leader turned up the heat in no uncertain terms.
Aside from a few franchise cornerstones, everybody should be nervously looking over their shoulder. Going through the motions will not be tolerated, and the roster looks hungry once again. Coupled with the injection of youth and energy acquired by Peters, things are looking up at long last.
That may not be good news for everyone. The squeeze is well and truly on, and anyone caught falling behind at training camp or in the preseason will get found out quickly.
Here are six Commanders players facing this precise situation in the coming weeks.
Washington Commanders players facing a role squeeze that feels hard to escape
Ahkello Witherspoon - Commanders CB
There was some intrigue around the Commanders signing Ahkello Witherspoon in free agency. It was only a one-year deal, but some encouraging production elsewhere and his previous connection to Adam Peters from their time together on the San Francisco 49ers gave him a fighting chance of staking a claim in a weak cornerback room.
That may not be the case anymore.
Witherspoon's inconsistent performances during Washington's offseason program prompted Peters to act. Antonio Hamilton Sr. was brought back, who is experienced and brings special teams value. Then the Commanders signed Rasul Douglas to a one-year deal worth up to $3.8 million.
This could be much more dangerous to Witherspoon's chances of making an impact on the cornerback rotation. He should still make the team — it's not exactly the strongest group. But the margin for error is a lot finer.
Jake Moody - Commanders PK
Veteran kicker Jake Moody is in a legitimate fight to retain his starting job. He is not out of the fight by any stretch of the imagination, but the emergence of undrafted rookie Drew Stevens is expected to go right down to the final cuts.
Moody got another one-year deal this offseason. The former Ohio State standout performed well enough after being signed off the Chicago Bears practice squad, but there were also some errors. The Commanders couldn't leave anything to chance, and competition had to be found to see if it pushes him to be more consistent.
Stevens is their guy. The ambitious UDFA wants to make the team. He's got a booming leg and has left a big impression so far. Moody has met him every step of the way, but there is just no telling how this roster battle will unfold when things get more intense.
