Van Jefferson Jr. - Commanders WR
As mentioned previously, the Washington Commanders have some important decisions to make at receiver. Not everyone will make it, but Adam Peters should be trying to get something back in return for a couple of pass-catchers who could draw interest from elsewhere.
The final one or two spots are being contested by players looking for a fresh start and young hopefuls eager for an opportunity. Van Jefferson Jr. falls into the former category, but he's done an admirable job of forcing his way into consideration throughout the offseason.
Jefferson's speed to stretch the field and growing chemistry with quarterback Jayden Daniels are encouraging. He's also got more proven production than anyone outside of Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs. That might just tip the scales in his favor, but if others are preferred, perhaps Peters could find another team willing to jump the queue.
It wouldn't be much. But if Jefferson is made surplus to requirements, something is better than nothing.
McLaurin, Diggs, Antonio Williams, Luke McCaffrey, and Jaylin Lane will make the team. That leaves one or maybe two depth positions for the other candidates. Jaden Bradley and Jacoby Jones could return to the practice squad, leaving Jefferson in a fight with Dyami Brown and Treylon Burks.
And it's still hanging in the balance.
Dorance Armstrong Jr. - Commanders OLB
The Commanders need all the help they can get defensively. But could veteran pass-rusher Dorance Armstrong Jr. be expendable if the right offer comes along?
Improvements have already been notable with Daronte Jones calling the shots, as his creative pressure packages and versatile alignments have already caused untold problems for both the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions this preseason. The same trend must continue during the regular season for Washington to stand any chance of making legitimate progress.
Adam Peters worked hard to strengthen the edge rushing group in free agency and the draft. Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson are the new top dogs, and even though both are dealing with slight injuries right now, they should be able to make a considerable impact by the time Week 1 rolls around.
Fifth-round rookie Joshua Josephs has been among the summer standouts and should have a key rotational role to play. Javontae Jean-Baptiste looks the part after missing most of the 2025 campaign through injury. Armstrong is also working his way back to health, but in a contract year and suspended for the first game, it'll be interesting to see what role he's given in Jones' system.
The former Kansas standout was putting together a breakout year before tearing his ACL. Armstrong is eager to make up for some lost time, but with added strength and depth, trading him for a good offer might be considered.
It's unlikely, but nothing should be completely dismissed.
