Joshua Josephs - Commanders OLB
As previously mentioned, it was hard to gauge much. This was a little above an up-tempo walkthrough in preparation for joint practice with the Miami Dolphins, but there were once again flashes of promise from rookie edge rusher Joshua Josephs.
The fifth-round pick out of Tennessee is having a really strong camp. Finding a role in the edge rushing unit will be difficult after some eye-catching additions to the ranks this offseason, but Josephs is doing enough to get noticed.
Josephs has some encouraging speed off the line of scrimmage. The first-year pro looks like he belongs, and confidence is clearly growing. It's a fantastic start, but what comes next is much more important.
The Washington Commanders will get plenty of good reps into Josephs in the preseason. Getting the chance to see what he can do against NFL linemen not on his own team is a far greater measuring stick. If he keeps standing out in an uncontrolled environment over the warm-up slate, that might be all defensive coordinator Daronte Jones needs to see.
Tempering expectations with Day 3 selections is always wise. Josephs won't get ahead of Odafe Oweh, K'Lavon Chaisson, or Dorance Armstrong Jr., but he could force his way into a key rotational role. And if the Commanders use Charles Omenihu as a backup 3-4 end, that's only going to strengthen his cause.
Dyami Brown - Commanders WR
The Commanders have several wide receivers vying for rotational roles or roster spots. This competition will run through the preseason before a final decision, but it already looks like it will be decided by fine margins.
Every rep counts. Every advantage must be seized. And for Dyami Brown, his previous chemistry with quarterback Jayden Daniels is standing him in good stead.
Brown came back to Washington after one season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He's got a second chance after things didn't go well, but there are no guarantees whatsoever regarding his place on the 53-man roster.
He knows it. And it's bringing a positive response.
The former North Carolina standout had a nice day, and Brown is stacking them. His timing with Daniels is on point, and he seems to be improving his ability to create separation. This is positive, but standing out in the summer has never been a problem for the 2021 third-round pick.
Where Brown struggles is finding the consistency needed on game days. That will be the tipping point, so he'll be a player everyone will watch closely in the preseason.
Much will depend on how many wideouts the Commanders take through. Brown is on the bubble, but he's given himself a fighting chance.
