Tre Hawkins III - Commanders CB
There are some concerns around the cornerback room, despite the optimism in the building. The Washington Commanders are confident that a more dominant front seven can make things easier for the secondary, but they still need strong cover guys capable of making their tackles count.
Adam Peters still has plenty of money to spend on additional reinforcements if the right opportunities present themselves. Until then, those around are getting the chance to impress, especially the players lower down the depth chart.
Some are beginning to catch the eye. Undrafted free agent Fred Davis II was flying all over the field on the first day of minicamp. On the second, it was Tre Hawkins III who left a big impression on those watching.
Hawkins was signed during the 2025 season. Despite featuring in only one game, he got a new one-year deal. The 6-foot-3 corner is physically imposing but hasn't quite put together his physical tools as yet. But if anyone can help fulfill his potential, it's defensive coordinator Daronte Jones.
Making some impressive plays during 11-on-11, almost picking off two passes along the way, is a definite step in the right direction. And there is an opening for Hawkins to make the team if he shows enough.
Chig Okonkwo - Commanders TE
There is an enormous opportunity awaiting tight end Chig Okonkwo. The Washington Commanders opted not to bring back Zach Ertz, whose time with the franchise had run its course. Adam Peters decided that more dynamism was needed and gave the free-agent signing a decent contract to get him in the building.
It hasn't taken Okonkwo long to make a positive impact.
Reporters and teammates have been blown away by the speed and urgency with which Okonkwo goes about his business. While the established stars aren't getting involved much in the team element of the minicamp sessions, the former Maryland standout continues to showcase why the Commanders made him a high-priority target.
Okonkwo's footwork, the smoothness of his route cuts, and his quick ability to turn his body upfield are impressive traits the Commanders are looking to utilize effectively. He's already got a big fan in quarterback Jayden Daniels, and offensive assistant Wes Welker is working with the veteran on some extra nuances that can help him reach new heights.
Bigger tests are no doubt coming for Okonkwo. He's ticked every box so far, and a genuine breakout in 2026 could be in the offing if he keeps this up.
