5 potential Commanders trade deadline targets from the Browns in 2024
By Dean Jones
Commanders could trade for Denzel Ward
- Chances: Unlikely
This one is a dream possibility for the Commanders. However, the Browns would find it difficult to part ways with stud cornerback Denzel Ward when push came to shove.
He's one of their few dependable performers on a defense giving up yards and points at will. Ward is an accomplished coverage presence - one of the league's best at locking down one side of the field with minimal fuss. The Browns would need an offer beyond their wildest dreams to even consider the notion.
Horn's talent was never in question. Staying healthy was a slight problem over his first few years in the league, but nothing to get overly concerned about. The former first-round pick out of Ohio State has alleviated these concerns, which makes him a franchise cornerstone rather than an expendable piece.
It wouldn't hurt the Commanders to call general manager Andrew Berry to see what it might take, especially considering the Browns are going nowhere fast at 1-5 and how Washington needs help in the secondary. But this would be a bombshell in no uncertain terms if Adam Peters could pull it off.
Commanders could trade for Myles Garrett
- Chances: Impossible
Go big or go home, right?
The thought of defensive end Myles Garrett being traded is asinine. He's the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year and a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer already. He's one of the few defensive players who can turn any game on its head. That is a special trait that not many in the league possess.
There would be a queue of suitors for Garrett if the Browns made him expendable. The Commanders need help on the edge if Dorance Armstrong Jr. is missing for a considerable period. Even when everyone is healthy, the former No. 1 overall selection represents an immediate upgrade on anything Washington's had for decades.
This wouldn't be cheap or all that feasible despite speculation in the media refusing the rule out the possibility. The Commanders have the salary-cap space and draft assets to pull this off, but it seems almost impossible all things considered.
Adam Peters is doing things differently. He's methodical and is molding the Commanders into a long-term, sustainably successful football operation. Even if the Browns did inexplicably make Garrett available to the highest bidder, Washington's front-office leader is unlikely to alter his chosen path.
