Commanders signed Chig Okonkwo
The door has not been completely closed on a potential return for veteran tight end Zach Ertz at some stage, who is currently working his way back from a torn ACL sustained during a horrific mid-air collision against the Minnesota Vikings. But considering the big splash made to acquire Chig Okonkwo, that seems unlikely.
Adam Peters wanted to find a dynamic pass-catching tight end to replace Ertz. As it turned out, the Washington Commanders secured a player with arguably the highest upside of the entire free-agent class.
Okonkwo has the size, speed, and dynamism to be a game-changer. Looking at how David Blough's offense is projected to utilize tight ends, he should also get a ton of targets with a smooth transition over the summer.
The free-agent acquisition is also in the best situation he's had to date. If things continue to improve, the ceiling is extremely high for the Maryland product in Washington.

Commanders signed Amik Robertson
Veteran departures were always expected in the cornerback room this offseason. Washington held high hopes for the unit before the 2025 campaign began, but injuries and performance regression meant these expectations went unmet. And drastic measures were needed to turn the tide.
Marshon Lattimore was cut. Noah Igbinoghene and Jonathan Jones went elsewhere. More moves were needed, but Adam Peters opted to deprioritize the cornerback group in favor of other key positions that were desperate for reinforcements.
The Commanders' first free-agent signing saw Amik Robertson join the ranks. His deal was somewhat cost-effective, but that doesn't mean there aren't concerns about this particular acquisition.
Robertson is a high-effort player who brings leadership and versatility. However, he is undersized. Alongside Mike Sainristil, that might be a problem for the Commanders against some of the more physically imposing passing attacks around the league.
It'll be interesting to see how this dynamic shakes out, but it could go either way.

Commanders drafted Sonny Styles
The Commanders were always immensely high on linebacker Sonny Styles during their comprehensive pre-draft assessments. Both Adam Peters and Dan Quinn raved about the former Ohio State standout, but they didn't hold out much hope that he would still be around at No. 7 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.
When running back Jeremiyah Love and wide receiver Carnell Tate both went in the top four, everything changed. Styles dropped into Washington's lap, and Peters didn't hesitate.
Styles has the scope to change everything for Washington's defense. He's big, long, fast, and makes things happen in all phases. The historic athletic testing at the NFL Scouting Combine is one thing, but his leadership, football IQ, and ability to communicate effectively are equally important.
If Styles meets expectations, he's a franchise cornerstone the Commanders can build around for the next decade or more. And with Bobby Wagner unlikely to return, this is the perfect replacement.
