Jayden Daniels' determination

Jayden Daniels kept plugging away. He's a supreme competitor who doesn't know how to quit. And even though the Washington Commanders never looked like they were clawing back their deficit, that doesn't mean the signal-caller wasn't trying with everything he had to turn things in his team's favor.

Daniels stood his ground in the pocket. Pressure arrived with alarming frequency, and the Commanders' protection failed to meet even modest expectations. The No. 2 pick in 2024 had to improvise, which involved getting the football out quickly to whatever option was open at the time.

Things improved a little for the Commanders after the break, but it couldn't have gotten much worse. The defense woke up, and the offense made some plays. Daniels was at the heart of it all, and for all the team's faults, he never looked flustered.

Hey, it's a positive. And it spoke to Daniels resolve to fight through adversity, if nothing else.

Obviously, it's a difficult situation. Daniels has too much determination to quit, and he won't accept anything less from his teammates. Whether the Niners relaxed a little is up for debate, but whatever happened made things easier for the signal-caller to make an impression.

Unfortunately, it wasn't quite enough.

Jayden Daniels' second-half heroics weren't enough

Jayden Daniels turned the screw in the second half. He was clinical, aggressive, and made things happen in difficult circumstances. The Commanders came back from the brink, giving the signal-caller a chance to snatch a memorable victory from the jaws of defeat.

Daniels was almost flawless in the final two quarters. The defense did their part, and the dynamic dual-threat got the football back with 52 seconds left in good field position to become Washington's closer.

Aside from a beautiful throw to third-round rookie Antonio Williams, the Commanders fell short. Daniels was let down by his offensive line, who couldn't even stop a three-man rush in a Hail Mary situation to close out the contest.

It was a tale of the game. Daniels did everything possible to try and get the Commanders back into the contest, but it wasn't enough. They couldn't fully recover from a disastrous first half, and they are now 1-4-1 at their bye week.

Either way, Daniels delivered another encouraging performance. When he got time on the field, he made things happen. But if the Commanders want to get out of their slump after some extended rest, the complementary football has to improve.

Otherwise, their downward spiral will continue.
