Commanders could sign Trevon Diggs

The Washington Commanders' cornerback room came into the season as a potential strength. It has become a weak link that has become an ongoing frustration and must be resolved swiftly by those in power this offseason.

Marshon Lattimore's trade to the Commanders was an unmitigated disaster. Poor form, a lack of discipline, two significant injuries, and an offseason arrest all but guarantee he'll be released in the not-too-distant future, saving Washington $18.5 million on the salary cap with no dead money attached.

Trey Amos and Mike Sainristil are the only corners guaranteed to be on the roster in 2026. Three new options are needed, and head coach Dan Quinn could go to bat for one previously accomplished player who thrived under his leadership.

Quinn turned Trevon Diggs' talent into an All-Pro performer. He was released by the Cowboys late in the season, and the same fate befell him with the Green Bay Packers. This represents a significant gamble, of course, but if anyone could bring the former Alabama standout back to his old self, it's Washington's head coach.

This would be nothing more than a one-year, prove-it deal. That's all Diggs will probably get from anyone after injuries have dented a once-promising career.

Commanders could sign Rico Dowdle

The Commanders are reportedly looking to implement more wide-zone runs into their scheme under new offensive coordinator David Blough. Promoting the former quarterback was a massive gamble from Dan Quinn, given that he's had no play-calling experience before. But if this move comes off, it's a stroke of genius in no uncertain terms.

Adding to the running back room is something the Commanders should consider this spring. Seventh-round rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt will be part of the team's plans, and Chris Rodriguez Jr. flashed enough promise to get an exclusive rights offer before free agency. Everything is cloudy after that, so adding an experienced presence to this unit is a possible route for Washington to take.

Quinn spent time with Rico Dowdle during their time on the Dallas Cowboys. He's got two straight seasons of more than 1,000 rushing yards, but he is unlikely to get another offer from the Carolina Panthers after his usage was reduced down the stretch and into the postseason.

Dowdle is an explosive, aggressive runner capable of going in between the tackles or gaining yards off the edge. He's a solid pass-catcher with proven production in high-stakes games. The South Carolina product is expected to get $6.5 million per year under a two-year, $13 million deal, which the Commanders could afford if they wanted.
