Commanders could target Alex Cappa
As previously mentioned, the Washington Commanders will probably move forward with Nick Allegretti as their starting center. They've ignored every other option so far, so their faith in the player seems unwavering despite his poor production at guard over the last two seasons.
Allegretti missed the entire summer after suffering a calf strain on the first day of training camp. For someone so inexperienced at center, he needed these vital reps. The issues at Lincoln Financial Field against the Philadelphia Eagles were painfully obvious, but things might improve once he gets more comfortable.
With only sixth-round rookie Matt Gulbin as the alternative, it's a massive gamble. But if the Super Bowl winner cannot make the strides needed in the coming weeks, general manager Adam Peters may be forced to give up on this experiment.
At the very least, the Commanders should consider an experienced backup. Alex Cappa may not have been a consistent performer for the Las Vegas Raiders last season, but there were some flashes before that with the Cincinnati Bengals. It's probably a last resort, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
Peters devalued the center position this offseason. But if the same trend continues, this approach will come under even more fire.
Commanders could target Zach Ertz
Chig Okonkwo was expected to play a key role for the Commanders this season. The dynamic tight end joined the club on a three-year deal this offseason, and his summer impact suggests he could be more dynamic as the unit's primary pass-catching threat in David Blough's offense.
That might still be the case, but injury doubts around Okonkwo come at the worst possible time.
The former Maryland standout left Week 1 versus the Eagles with a hamstring issue. Head coach Dan Quinn will provide more updates as the week goes on, but for someone reliant on quick-twitch movements and explosiveness after the catch, it's worrying.
Ben Sinnott didn't get involved all that much when Okonkwo went to the sidelines. That suggests a lack of trust, and if the free-agent signing news isn't good, it could lead the Commanders back to Zach Ertz.
The three-time Pro Bowler is looking for a route back into the league after getting the all-clear to resume football activities following a torn ACL. Ertz emerged as a dependable pass-catcher for the Commanders during his two seasons in Washington. They moved on, but plans can change quickly.
Going back to Ertz would likely end Sinnott's long-term aspirations. But if Okonkwo has to miss games, they'll need more than that.
