Marshon Lattimore - Commanders CB

To say Marshon Lattimore's bombshell trade to the Washington Commanders hasn't gone well would be an understatement. General manager Adam Peters thought enough progress was being made to make a daring move for the four-time Pro Bowl cornerback, believing his shutdown capabilities may be enough to get this team further than expected in Year 1 of this ambitious project.

Lattimore came into the Commanders with a hamstring injury that meant he never looked comfortable. He tried valiantly to help during Washington's incredible run to the NFC Championship Game, but the complication proved difficult to overcome.

All hope was not lost. The Commanders thought a full offseason to heal and pick up the scheme would help him return to his old form. Lattimore looked sharp throughout the summer. Unfortunately, this didn't go through into a competitive setting.

For the first time in his professional career, Lattimore was actively targeted as a weak link. They have been successful in doing so. His mirroring of receivers downfield was lackluster. Poor technique led to several defensive pass interference penalties in critical moments. His torn ACL was a microcosm of his time in Washington.

Lattimore was a prime candidate to be cut even before his recent arrest. The $18.5 million in savings attached can be better spent elsewhere.

Nick Allegretti - Commanders OL

There were very few positives to take from the season. However, the offensive line was an undeniable bright spot amid the almost constant misery.

The Commanders made some hefty investments in the protection around quarterback Jayden Daniels. Laremy Tunsil and Josh Conerly Jr. look like a long-term bookend tackle tandem. Tyler Biadasz was solid at the center spot. Sam Cosmi looked good before getting hurt again, and if left guard Chris Paul gets extended, all five starters will be back in 2026.

That would be huge for cohesion and chemistry, especially with a new offensive line coach coming into the fold. What that means for others further down the proverbial food chain is undetermined, but the Commanders might look to offload a high earner like Nick Allegretti to free up more funds.

Allegretti's time as a starter didn't go well at either guard position. However, he's a serviceable backup option, which was needed down the stretch. Biadasz went to injured reserve, and the Super Bowl winner slotted seamlessly into his spot over the final two games of 2025.

This sort of versatility could ensure he sees out his contract. Allegretti is counting $7.17 million against the salary cap, which is a lot of money for backup. So all signs point to an early departure.
