5 Commanders players on the hot seat entering Week 9 at the NY Giants
By Dean Jones
Austin Ekeler - Commanders RB
Brian Robinson Jr. was listed as questionable heading into Week 9. Even if the Washington Commanders running back can participate, he's unlikely to be 100 percent with a hamstring issue.
That makes Austin Ekeler's role more vital than ever against the New York Giants. The veteran free-agent signing has adjusted superbly to a more complimentary role behind Robinson. He's making every rep count, becoming an asset in the passing game, and also making a considerable impact as a kick returner for good measure.
This is exactly what Ekeler was looking for upon joining the Commanders. However, this might be one of the games where more is required depending on Robinson's participation.
The former undrafted free agent out of Colorado State knows how to be the workhorse. Ekeler did that with great success consistently during his time with the Los Angeles Chargers. If the Commanders don't have Robinson to depend upon or need to reduce his carries to preserve long-term fitness levels, the veteran needs to step up accordingly.
Mike Sainristil - Commanders CB
The Giants don't have many offensive weapons that can strike fear into the hearts of defenses around the league. It also doesn't help that veteran quarterback Daniel Jones continues to go through complications with his starting spot hanging by a thread.
Taking them lightly is not an option. Jones saves his best football for the Commanders and has enjoyed tremendous success versus his NFC East rival in recent years. That makes it essential to keep him contained in the pocket and cover up receivers effectively in the passing game.
Mike Sainristil's role will be crucial. The second-round rookie has come on significantly in recent weeks after going through a typical adjustment period. Whether he's up against Malik Nabers or Darius Slayton on the outside, the former Michigan star must produce the goods.
The Commanders have a tremendous player on their hands in Sainristil. He's made a smooth transition to an outside role after initially being projected as the team's nickel cornerback before the campaign. Washington needs this trend to continue in pursuit of reaching 7-2 before welcoming the Pittsburgh Steelers to Northwest Stadium in Week 10.
