Commanders must avoid Shemar Stewart
- Edge Rusher | Texas A&M Aggies
As previously mentioned, the Washington Commanders could use another dynamic edge rusher to bolster the options already available. Adam Peters focused his attention on dependable veterans with more prowess against the run than anything else this offseason. Although positive, this unit lacks the explosiveness needed to scare opposing offensive lines.
Peters can rectify this complication during the 2025 NFL Draft. It's a decent group of prospects emerging this year. There's one blue-chip performer (Abdul Carter) and a plethora of promising individuals who could become accomplished starters with some extra refinement.
There are none more polarizing than Shemar Stewart. The Texas A&M product has every athletic measurable needed to carve out a successful career for himself. Things haven't come together as yet, so any team that takes him on will be gambling heavily on his upside finally becoming something more.
Stewart flashed enormous promise at times with the Aggies. These moments were way too fleeting to guarantee a smooth transition to the pros. What the Commanders must figure out is how long it would take for everything to click.
The Commanders need help immediately. Unless there's 100 percent conviction that Stewart can fit in and develop quickly, they should explore alternatives. There is also a possibility he could be long gone by the time Washington goes on the clock.
Commanders must avoid Isaiah Bond
- Wide Receiver | Texas Longhorns
The Commanders could acquire another wide receiver to help quarterback Jayden Daniels excel further. Adam Peters made a big splash in the trade market by landing Deebo Samuel Sr. from the San Francisco 49ers. This comes with some risk, but the rewards would be substantial if the All-Pro bounces back from a down year.
Terry McLaurin is the top dog. Luke McCaffrey has shown promise despite being used sparingly as a rookie. K.J. Osborn and Noah Brown were re-signed to one-year deals. The Commanders also coaxed Michael Gallup out of retirement to potentially factor into their rotation next time around.
That shouldn't prevent the Commanders from examining an explosive, dynamic prospect from the college ranks. There's a drop-off in talent after the first three rounds, so Peters needs to address this early if it's a direction he chooses to pursue.
Those plans are unlikely to include Isaiah Bond. The Texas prospect is currently being investigated for an alleged sexual assault. He's vehemently denied these accusations, but the timing couldn't be worse.
Teams are not going to look favorably on this development. Bond was projected as a Day 2 selection before this. There is now a good chance some teams, including the Commanders, have him struck off their draft board entirely.
