Austin Ekeler - Commanders RB

It's no secret that the Washington Commanders need more from the running back position. Kliff Kingsbury's offense became far too reliant on quarterback Jayden Daniels to gain yards on the ground as the 2024 season went on. He's more than capable of doing that with such elite-level, dynamic traits, but those in power must realize this is not sustainable long-term.

Daniels must pick and choose his spots. He cannot be the sole focus once the running backs struggle to gain yards over the early exchanges of games. It helps enormously, but it also increases the risk of injury to Washington's franchise player.

If the Commanders can find a genuine three-down force from a superb draft class, the better their chances will improve. Should Washington focus on acquiring another pass-catching backfield threat to provide Daniels with a useful outlet in key moments, that raises the stakes for Austin Ekeler in no uncertain terms.

Ekeler joined on a two-year deal from the Los Angeles Chargers last spring. He was tasked with pass-catching duties and earned second-team All-Pro honors as a kick returner. There was a lot to like, although a devastating concussion suffered against the Dallas Cowboys dented his progress considerably.

The former undrafted free agent out of Western Colorado managed to recover in time for the postseason, but he didn't look the same. Ekeler's costly fumble in the NFC Championship game versus the Philadelphia Eagles was a body blow — something that led to speculation regarding his future heading into the 2025 offseason.

Ekeler is entering the final year of his deal with plenty of wear and tear on his body. He should have another decent season left before facing an uncertain future next offseason, but the Commanders cannot settle. If someone high on their draft board represents good value, Adam Peters won't hesitate to pull the trigger.

Some analysts believe this scenario could make Ekeler available for trade. Teams could use his experience and pass-catching prowess to complement what they already have on the books. But considering this would be nothing more than a short-term solution, the draft compensation isn't going to be earth-shattering if a willing suitor came forward.

The Commanders pivoted to win-now mode this offseason. Peters knows the next two or three years are critical before Daniels gets a potentially barrier-breaking contract extension. Having proven performers like Ekeler around outweighs the benefit of shipping them out. But as always, everyone has a price in the NFL.

Regardless of whether Ekeler stays or not, this will probably be his final season in Washington.
