7 prospects the Commanders must consider on Day 3 of 2023 NFL Draft

Commanders could draft Clayton Tune
- Quarterback | Houston Cougars
After resisting the temptation to select Will Levis or Hendon Hooker, the Washington Commanders could target a quarterback on Day 3 of the 2023 NFL Draft. With only Sam Howell and Jacoby Brissett as their current options, a No. 3 to compete in training camp wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world.
Clayton Tune looks like a nice development project. The signal-caller’s mobility and leadership already appear NFL-ready, with the Houston product also displaying accuracy on short to intermediate routes for good measure.
As with most quarterbacks at this stage, Tune is not without flaws. He gets flustered in the pocket on occasion, struggles to recognize blitzes, doesn’t have enough arm strength, and can often force the football where it doesn’t belong under pressure.
Commanders could draft Andre Carter II
- Edge Rusher | Army Black Knights
It doesn’t look like Chase Young will be traded as it stands. But the Commanders need to form a contingency plan in the event either the No. 2 overall selection in 2020 or Montez Sweat departs when their contracts expire in 2024.
Andre Carter II is a fascinating prospect who is delaying his Army commitments to pursue an NFL career. The pass-rusher looked like a potential first-round pick in 2021 before dipping significantly last season, which has obviously put some teams off from taking the plunge.
Carter could provide an energetic presence to Washington’s depth behind Young and Sweat. And this is a great fit for him to learn.
