8 prospects the Commanders must target on Day 2 of 2023 NFL Draft
By Jonathan Eig
Commanders could draft John Michael Schmitz
- Center | Minnesota Golden Gophers
In case you haven’t noticed, I think it’s pretty likely the Washington Commanders will select an offensive lineman on Day 2. John Michael Schmitz may be the most polished interior blocker on the board.
He does not have great straight-line speed, but he is quick and very powerful in close. Schmitz is a Day 1 starter at center if Chase Roullier cannot return, and provides excellent depth on the interior if the veteran is ready.
Commanders could draft Dorian Williams
- Linebacker | Tulane Green Wave
Dorian Williams fits the mold that the Commanders seem to like in a linebacker. He is on the lighter side but moves extremely well. He plays a lot like Cody Barton, the free agent they brought in this season to take the place of Cole Holcomb.
It seems as if this coaching staff favors light, mobile linebackers. A lot of scouts have a fourth-round grade on Williams, but Washington has shown a willingness to grab a guy early if they like him, and I think this is the case where the one-time Tulane star is concerned.
Commanders could draft DeMarvion Overshown
- Linebacker | Texas Longhorns
DeMarvion Overshown fits the same mold as Williams. He is about the same size and has about the same speed, but I see him as a player who will press the line a bit more.
Though he can cover, Overshown looks to be a better run defender and blitzer than Williams. It gives the Commanders an interesting choice should they both be on the board in Round No. 3.
Williams a closer to a buffalo nickel player, while Overshown would play more like Holcomb. But either one would offer solid improvement to a thin linebacking corps.
