Ranking four worst draft picks from Ron Rivera’s Commanders tenure so far
By Dean Jones
Chase Young – Commanders DE
- Round No. 1 (Pick No. 2)
- 2020 NFL Draft
Hindsight is a wonderful thing to have. While Chase Young was arguably the right pick at No. 2 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft after coming into the franchise with generational physical attributes, his career has not gone according to plan as yet and is something that has to change heading into a make-or-break campaign for the player.
Young started off well enough en route to NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. However, the former Ohio State stud has played 12 games and accumulated just 1.5 sacks since then thanks to a series of frustrating injury complications.
The Commanders have a pivotal decision to make regarding Young’s fifth-year option before the season. Regardless of which way those in power decide to go, there is immense urgency for the pass-rusher to become the dominant figure Washington hoped for when they invested such a high-end selection on his services.
This is all about Young’s mentality to silence some ongoing doubters. If the defensive end cannot meet expectations and the Commanders don’t trigger his contract clause, this might be his final campaign in Washington.
Young looks healthy for the start of off-season workouts and is clearly determined to return to the form of old. But if Ron Rivera had this pick again, he might not go down the same route.
